Good hire.
Little disappointed here. Not so much in the coach himself, but the process. Our AD hires a damn search firm for nearly every recent coaching vacancy and ends up hiring people who were interested in the job from the beginning. In this case, we had assistant coaches from teams in the Final 4 and NIT who were waiting to interview - Teis supposedly wanted to get it over with, so he opted for the safe choice. We went through the same thing with Dennis Franchione.

I'm curious what we are going to pay the man.. reports are out that we were willing to pay 2-3x more than the last coach.
This is Texas State doing its part to improve conference basketball! 04-cheers
I agree. Kasper applied before the search firm had thier results. The football hire went the same way. Just an annoying process. But honestly we can't afford those assistants. They get paid more then we can offer. Unless they want a salary cut for head coach experience. I think the SFA guy won't jump as fast either.
If I am not mistaken that means we have new coaches at 3 struggling BBall schools
Ga Southern
Tx State
TROY

And the 4th hire was at USA- the strongest in the conference- hired probably the best hire of the 4.

It looks like the conference is turning in the right direction when it comes to BBall.

Great point. He's older and his daughter goes to school at TXST... plus he stuck around at SFA for quite some time. Would be nice to find some coaching stability in someone who can win
I actually don't like U.S.A's hire that much. I think Texas State made the best hire.
The irony here is, Kasper is a former player and alum of UNT and asked to be interviewed when Johnny Jones left for LSU. Kasper was never given an interview, Tony Benford was hired and the rest is history. I think Texas State's hiring of Kasper was a no brainer.

In my opinion, UNT has the most inept Athletic Director in the FBS.

Ouch. Tony Benford looked like he was about to have an emotional collapse at the Cajundome. Is he still the coach? It looked like he lost his players.
Great hire. I would trade coaches.
A little surprised that the Bobcats were able to snag Kasper, but congratulations on a great hire. Wish we could trade you Benford for Danny. (sigh).

We didn't expect you to like him, Slappy. You're going to like him even less in the next few years.

It will be interesting to see how he works out. The Butler and USA jobs are very very different.
Kaspar is a great hire. If Greg Popovich endorses your decision, you must have done something right.

I'm excited...

Atlanta, Ga. – Newly introduced Texas State head men's basketball coach Danny Kaspar was presented with the 2013 Hugh Durhan Award today at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. The award is given annually to the nation's top mid-major coach.

Kaspar led Stephen F. Austin to its third Southland Conference title, a 27-5 overall record and a berth in the NIT. The Lumberjacks mark of 27-5 was the fourth-best record in all of Division I basketball in 2013. Kaspar's other honors this year include being named the 2013 National Association of Basketball Coaches District 23 Coach of the Year, and the Southland Conference Coach of the Year.

The award is named in honor of Hugh Durham who had retired at the end of the 2004-05 season. Durham is one of just twelve coaches to have led two different programs to the NCAA Final Four (Florida State in 1972 and Georgia in 1983). He is the only coach among that group to have led both schools to their lone Final Four appearance.

The other finalists for the award included Jim Baron (Canisius), Rick Byrd (Belmont), Bill Coen (Northeastern), Keith Dambrot (Akron), Kermit Davis (Middle Tennessee), Billy Donlon (Wright State), Andy Enfield (Florida Gulf Coast), Anthony Evans (Norfolk State), Chris Holtmann (Gardner-Webb), Matt Matheny (Elon), Joe Mihalich (Niagara), Jim Molinari (Western Illinois), LeVelle Moton (North Carolina Central), Steve Pikiell (Stony Brook), Joe Scott (Denver), Pat Skerry (Towson), Zach Spiker (Army), Wayne Tinkle (Montana), Tod Kowalczyk (Toledo), Michael White (Louisiana Tech).
Kaspar is a hard working coach who will bring respect back to Texas State basketball. He is a winner. Great Hire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
