American Athletic Conference is new name for former Big East, sources told @espn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The current Big East Conference has announced that it will be renamed the American Athletic Conference and will rebrand as such across all platforms, associations and media at the conclusion of the 2012-13 sports seasons. The announcement was made today by Commissioner Mike Aresco after unanimous approval by the Conference’s Board of Directors.

Whatever. Hear it enough and it'll sound ok.

Let the jokes begin.

The name is fine, now if we can just get American Airlines to sponsor it.

While I wish it was something else, its not that bad - "AAC" it'll grow on people after awhile

Don't understand why they just won't go with the Metro Conference.

Sounds fine to me, much better than the original one mentioned. I like that it doesn't have a number, personally.

Agreed. American Athletic Conference is better than Conference America (CUSA II) or anything with "Big" attached, but I still like plain old Metro Conference (The MC) best.

"AAC" is most associated with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (communication methods used to supplement or replace speech for those with impairments in production or comprehension of spoken or written language). Other uses of the acronym AAC includes Advanced Audio Coding, a compression and encoding scheme for digital audio, and the American Airlines Center.

None of these offer much fertile ground for ribbing. It is a bit close to the ACC - not my favorite but tough to deny their success (referee assistance notwithstanding).

I guess AAC could also stand for Aresco's Athletic Conference, or perhaps Alcoholics Anonymous Conference (which could also be called the BWC, or Bill Wilson Conference).
