is the head coach of the Old Dominion Monarchs men's basketball team.

It is official.

I don't like the hire. I'm pretty fired up about it to be honest. But that is the bottom line. He is here and he is ours. I will calm down over the next few hours or days and I will support him until he gives me reason not to.
Yeah. Same here.

But respect is earned.

BTW: no female interns!
I know that there are a lot of upset folks on here, but I really don't believe anything we do at this point is going to make this hire go away. I come from an environment where once a decision is made, like it or not, you do everythng in your power to make the decision work best for the orgainzation. That's kind of how I see this. He is the new coach. This is still the Monarch team we love and support. The best thing to do now is do everything in our power to help this man have a long successful run as the coach of a winning Old Dominion University Men's Basketball Team.
I cannot believe we hired Jeff Jones. I don't think this was a bad hire. It was a terrible hire. He doesn't fit any of the qualities that were highlighted when ODU began the search. He is old, coaches a boring brand of bball, unproven recruiter, questionable character issues, marginal success, no charisma, etc. I am stunned Jones was even interviewed.

I agree. It is surprising the guy even got an interview much less the job.
I don't know anything about this guy, I might go down tomorrow morning and see what he's like.

Don't take your wife or girlfriend.
I'll probably be in attendance tomorrow for the press conference after I get out of class.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. We deserve so much better. Until JJ gets some awesome recruits or has one heck of a winning year then I'll be pissed for quite awhile.

On another note, thank the Lord for football.
Based on a sample size of one (Mike Krzyzewski), I have a theory that the quality of a coach is inversely proportional to the difficulty of pronunciation of his name. Because of this, I don't rate Jeff Jones.

I have to agree here 100%

I am not pulling my donations because I view that money as support for the student athletes. Like it or not it is what it is.
I am starting to calm down a bit, as my initial reaction was one of pure anger. Look, it's not the great pick we all wanted, and I'm still very upset with Wood Selig for picking another one of his buddies over more qualified candidates, but I thought I'd provide a little bit of perspective.

Take from it what you will. It's a comparison of recruits from 2007-2012, between ODU and AU. Color represents school, size represents height in inches. My take: he didn't do a bad job recruiting at American. Non-scholarship or not, it's not easy to recruit there. If he brings in a few great recruits from Boo Williams, I think more of us can warm up to him.

But as someone pointed out, that respect will need to be earned. I have nothing against Jones; it's not his fault he was hired. My ax to grind is with Wood Selig.

So, for the program's sake, let's hope Jones proves us all wrong. I will support the student athletes 100%, but Jones must win me over. And Wood will never have my support again unless Jones turns into a stud coach. Period.
It's ok to be upset about the hire if it isn't "your guy", however, it isn't Jeff Jones's fault. There was a job opening, he applied and was hired. I believe we, as MONARCHS, owe him at least the opportunity make us believers in him and the things he can do for our men's basketball program.

THIS. I'm glad I'm not the only one cooling off a bit. Note, there is a difference between "cooling off" and "warming up", LOL.
Maybe he has a foot hole in DC recruiting.

Freudian slip?
Ok so what if we had hired this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beilein

My point is (although obviously not available) he kicked one of our arch rivals in the rear a couple weeks back. He out coached the opponent period. And who would have thought he was a stellar basketball coach. Maybe Jeff Jones was interviewed for having the best longterm plan. If we are all looking for a coach from a certain genre, with a comfortable face value appealing presence then we didn't get it. There is a lot to coaching that goes well beyond that.

Jeff Jones took UVA to the elite 8 and after 10 years in the DC region he knows the recruiting trail there. I hope we aren't storing any baggage with this hire. So let's see how the press conference goes......maybe there is a plan in store.

I don't get the Beilein reference, he's had 4 under .500 seasons in 35 years of head coaching and a ton of NCAA wins. The biggest reason few people have heard of him is probably Izzo's shadow.
