Tulsa is scampering to the new conference with UH. Which leaves us where exactly?
The Sunbelt.
Needing to fix our own house before worrying about the neighborhood, which we've been discussing in the realignment thread for a while now.
Who is dragging down the neighborhood? We are.

Fixing up one's house only goes so far. If the property values of the neighborhood tank, you property value tends to go down with it, even if you meticulously maintain your house and replace the roof.

Our next chance will come if we maintain our house and C-USA undergoes some much needed team-quality gentrification.

My main concern is fixing our issues. The financial difference between C-USA and what used to be the Big East isn't that large. While I think we can end up there (and I'd prefer to be there), we won't have a chance unless we make some positive steps.

Since Rice is getting $$$ from all the defecting CUSA schools and all new CUSA schools are paying $2 million to enter, I suggest the following short-term POSITIVE steps that shows Rice cares about athletics:

1) Resolve the Kazemi/AD fiasco. If the AD's actions were true, fire him. Buy him out. Publicly state the findings.
2) Either way, fire Braun and Williams. Use "the nobody wants Rice" CUSA funds.
3) If AD is removed, select new AD and allow him/her to hire both basketball coaches.
4) Athletic department states expectations on coaches will be raised while simultaneously increasing support to do so.
5) Publicly release funding numbers of end-zone facility and deadline to meet total. Use Bailiff to drum up support.
6) Athletic departments should state, while Rice is very happy to be in CUSA, we miss UH, SMU, Tulsa, and Tulane.

Whether or not Greenspan stays, he left us a "gift" by extending Braun till 2017. That is going to cost us a fortune to fire him

That's why I say use the CUSA slush funds coming to Rice. Look at all the schools that paid CUSA millions to defect: SMU, Tulane, UH, Memphis, UCF, ECU.... Tulsa paid the cheap price of $500k and the 1.5 million for the 2013-2014 TV rights.

If Rice keeps Braun, it'll reinforce the "same ol' Rice" perception by our peers.

I'm going out to the garage to work on my Gran Torino. You keep these punks off my yard.

Question: is everybody we know abandoning us or are we just moving too slowly to keep up?

The latter.

C-USA was a last ditch better-than-the-sunbelt conference. People were going to bolt as soon as they could.

Of course, they all thought they were bailing to a much better payday. That isn't the case any more.

We have been moving too slowly for sure and that conference's choice of UH made it even more difficult for us.

Not as good as previously thought, but better than C-USA.

Tulsa recently decided to bolt, so there has to be some merit. They were probably sold a bill of goods that was closer to reality than the rainbows and unicorns that SMU/UH etc. thought they were getting.

Well, I mean, it is still more money and better conference quality for sure. No one can deny that. Just isn't a huge amount more money as we were led to believe. We know what their TV deal is now so it is pretty easy to see.

But ... we also don't know what our deal will eventually be, so the difference may be greater than you think.

Well, we are talking somewhere in the neighborhood of $1-2 mil difference, not $10 mil as we were led to believe. Yeah, I'd like that extra mil or so (and I hope we can get there eventually), but we aren't missing a huge improvement at the moment.

That $1-2 million could fund Braun's buyout.
Quote: What Hamrick didn't say is the reconfigured C-USA will not only be a better geographic fit, but will also present a more level playing field for the school.

Per 2012 Sagarin, the MAC ended up ranked higher than C-USA. The new C-USA is a better fit because improvement is optional - the level of competition is so low that you should do better by comparison.
