Full Version: The "Pick your Olympic Sports Additions" Thread
You're currently viewing a stripped down version of our content. View the full version with proper formatting.
Assumptions:
  • FBS Football penalties are not taken into account (i.e. UMass / ODU would be allowed to play D1 football in another conference, while having their Oly Sports in this conference
  • BE Expands with three Olympic Sports teams
  • Teams added (at the very least) do not detract from any gains by any other team.
  • THESE ARE OLYMPIC SPORTS ADDS ONLY

Pick your top 3!
Is this idea near close to happen? I highly doubt it. If Olympic sports team can be added, BE would done it months ago with Boise and SDSU. Why now? Bad timing.

Simple answer? Because football is the #1 driver. These are perk additions, that make sense and have little downside. We are in absolutely no rush to force a decision.
Until I see the word coming from BE presidents and Officials, this is well a dream of fans.

It's the offseason. It's not like we have anything better to do.
No to three.
I see. lol. But my opinion is that BE has better plans than adding some one year Basketball powers.

We will see what this conference is really up to soon hopefully.
No one!!

We stabilize in 2015 with Navy. Basketball hybrid conference is a failed concept that nearly killed the conference... if you call this the survival of the Big East.
Understand the hybrid issue, but the conference isn't going to add six non-football schools and recreate the instability issues. Go with two only and everybody benefits. Give Wichita St and VCU options of going FBS (which both might have interest and would be much more capable than C7 schools), and those two schools wouldn't attempt to undermine football.

This conference needs an upgrade in basketball media interest. Wichita St and VCU provide that, as their coaches are some of the hottest commodities around, both bring in substantial local followings, and complement existing schools. (Wichita St for Tulsa and even Memphis and VCU for ECU and Temple.)

ECU, SMU, UCF, Tulane etc haven't exactly been world beaters in basketball and these two would provide a counteracting balance. Adding Wichita St and VCU would bring in a huge excitement factor that this league needs in its "inaugural" year.
I just picked 1: VCU
Only 1. Add VCU or Wichita State. Not sure which has the biggest upside.

VCU brings a solid market and is a perfect institutional fit for the rest of the conference. Personally I'd rather have VCU as an ECU fan. They'd probably help pacify Temple as well.

Wichita State is only 2.5 hrs from Tulsa and would make a good travel partner. They'd make a nice western division if we go with a divisional setup.

That concept was also started by the Catholic schools who had just as many members as football schools. That's why it didn't work. Having only one makes perfect sense if you ask me. I can even see an argument for having 3 but I lean heavily toward just 1.

Not completely.

Let's meet in the middle and add 2. Wichita State (I hear they have 15k in attendance regularly) and VCU.

I'd like to get ODU and UMass in this game somehow... it just doesn't seem likely.
I take ODU if we are talking Olympic Sports. They have had many OS ranked teams. Probably more than some of us.

IMO it only makes sense to take an OLY member that doesn't play football. If we take ODU we're basically obligated to take them for all sports. They have no where to park FB only.

Umass MIGHT work but if UConn leaves we're left with a far northeastern outlier and apathetic fanbase with no recruiting benefits. Again, they'd want in for football at some point as well.

You are right about their D1A FB, so the only one that makes sense is VCU unless Navy plays in the west then take Wichita.

If it were up to me I'd have added VCU weeks ago. Not sure about WSU. If we lose another member I'd go after Army FB and WSU Oly. I wouldn't touch UMass with a 10 foot pole. Too much liability there if UConn bolts.
Give it a few years and watch the ODU, UNCC, App State, and others experiment with FBS football. IMHO future members should be all sport with proven football support at the school. We have time on our side right now and candidates will always be available for us when the next shift occurs.
