Apparently a compromise was met in getting the votes for Idaho and New Mexico State as new members. The presidents agreed to pay a travel stipend to every SBC Football member traveling out to play Idaho and NMSU in football. Idaho and NMSU will also receive the stipend to travel east to play football games in the Sun Belt. Sadly that is what it took to get votes in the new SBC, further diluting conference money.

We will just have to fill the stadiums.
The only reason to add Idaho and NMSU is if there is a payout penalty if you are below 12. Otherwise they dilute the payouts and drag the conference down in the performance payouts. I will be interested to see what this penalty is.
I understand the stipend for members traveling to those schools, but don't under the stipend for those schools to travel east.

Didn't the Sun Belt just do them a favor by giving them an FBS home and no matter what conference they join they were going to have airfare due to their location. If that is the deal Idaho and NMSU must have some of the best used car salesmen in the business.

That is stupid.
So let me get this straight, NMSU and Idaho are draining the pot...

Have I got it?

As will App State and GA Southern. Your going to be paid the same Stipend as well.

If you deduct the travel stipend from the conference payout, it will be diluted anyway. Not sure what the amount is at this point for the stipend.
I posted this in the thread about them being added. It makes no sense we are in essence saving their football programs and are going to pay them to do so.
What makes it more ridiculous is that theyre having to pay travel stipends in a conference which for 2 years has been grandstanding on the importance of staying in and maintaining a compact footprint.
Sun Belt has Paul Bunyan sized feet.

Who really believes Idaho will still be in the SBC a decade from now? This is a marriage of convenience, and it's temporary. We need FBS schools and they need a league -- for now.

On the same day the announcement was made, the Vandals AD said they will have to improve their facilities.

There is no question that Idaho wants to become competitive and get a Mountain West bid. That's their goal. If they can do it, good for them. Apparently, all it takes to get a conference invite these days is 2-3 years of winning. I guarantee that the school will either find a way to improve and make it to the MWC; or they won't and give up the FBS ghost, returning to FCS.

Idaho has an open invitation to the Big Sky, where they were once a football power. That invite gives them an opportunity to try and make a go of it at the next level. If not, they can always go home.

I assume that NMSU and Idaho will also receive the same stipends for all of their road games? This is seriously a bad mistake.

With the guaranteed payouts in the new system, no team will ever move back to FCS. You get $1.5 million in guaranteed payments plus an additional $500k per money game for being FBS. The extra cost of FBS more than pays for itself, and the recognition is not comparable. Unless Idaho becomes very competitive on the field, I don't see the MWC inviting them anytime soon. The spin coming from Idaho's AD is just trying to ease the frustration with them being located in a conference across the country. He even made the comment that a new conference could form which we know is nearly next to impossible.

These cute hills have been around 130 million years longer than the rockies.
Idaho is in the SBC until you throw them out.
