"UAB was 86th nationally (426.8 yards per game allowed) in a 3-9 season last year. That mark was seventh among 12 Conference USA teams in a high-scoring league."

Still a huge improvement from the Callaway era when we were in 100+ territory.
Just a bad to mediocre defense and we go bowling. I shudder to think how good we could be with a defense like the Steel Shield and this offence.
If we could get our turnover ratio to even out, or even land on the plus side, I think we'd go bowling.

I don't know what it was last year, but it was atrocious, IIRC.
The problem last year was inconsistency - a couple of very good games against good teams and a couple of horrible games against bad teams. Turnover-wise I think it was primarily a lack of defensive TOs. I don't think the offense was that bad - about 15 INTs and maybe 10 fumbles? Or perhaps it was when the offensive TOs happened.
18 turnovers in our favor, 27 not
Well part of the lack of def turnovers was the lack of pressure we got on their qb. If we get more pressure on a qb the caveat being quick pressure, more turnovers will come. I think we did well in fumble giving as much as we got but the big difference was in int. Part of our problem of offensive turnovers was they got pressure on Brown & forced him into bad plays.
Good defense BEGINS with pressure on the opposing QB and success on offense BEGINS with preventing that pressure on our own QB. Nearly every team has a decent QB who can take advantage of having time to find open receivers or time to let plays develop when running an option play.
