fired at UCLA was because he hated the AAU coaches in that area, and they hated him, and like it or not, at the big time level, those coaches determine your recruiting, and it got to the point where UCLA couldn't get the top players because of Howland's relationship to the coaches.

I don't exactly know the deal with Tubby Smith, but Minnesota has had NCAA problems prior to his arriving and I guess he hasn't taken them to the level they think he should. Big time coaching is a tough racket. They make a lot of money, but their jobs are very shaky.

UCLA is supposedly very interested in Brad Stevens at Butler, but as someone said, he'd be crazy to jump into that job. He's pretty secure at Butler and at UCLA the expectations would be so high, probably nobody could match them. Do you think Don Maestri could have coached at UCLA for 31 years or Steve for 10 years? Not likely. Until someone comes in like Saban did at Alabama, finally putting the ghost of Bear Bryant to bed, and winning national championships, the ghost of John Wooden looms to large for any coach to succeed.01-lauramac2
It is encouraging to see young coaches who are making rational decisions about their jobs. I figure Smart and Stevens figure they can compete at the highest level where they are, and they are making probably more money than they have time to spend already. So if they like where they are, why not stay where they are?
Howland had an old school coaching philosophy. You're not going to get the blue chips with a ball control offense. He did ease up this season which he was required to do get that top 5 recruiting class. Even Kevin Love's father complained that he wasn't using his son right. But really did Howland in was attendance was dropping each year and they just reopen a renovated Pauley pavilion.
Plus he had the big kid a year or two ago who was a head case that Howland evidently did not keep under control
I was thinking that taxes and cost of living are so much higher in LA that a coach like Stevens or Smart could get twice as much gross money and not really improve their standard of living all that much (if at all). And on top of that they would not have job security as you guys have pointed out.

They should go after Florida Gulf Coast's coach.
Why would he leave Florida Gulf Coast. The guy is super rich. He doesn't need financial security that a big time job would give someone. He's now a king where he is. I seem to recall he doesn't even take a salary for coaching. Is that correct? Maybe someone else has heard or read that somewhere.

I had read where he was worth 100 million dollars. However, a follow-up article stated that was not true- he was a small investor in a start-up company that made millions, so his take was relatively small. I really don't know the truth, but money may not be the main consideration with regard to where he coaches.
I read where they sold the start up company for $100 million, so if he was one of the main stockholders, he should be fairly wealthy. Seems like I heard he didn't take a salary for coaching the team, but that could have been just a rumor.
