Georgia Southern to move to FBS, Sun Belt

March 26, 2013

By Doug Roberson

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia Southern’s move to the Sun Belt Conference is scheduled be announced at a news conference at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Statesboro, and the Eagles will be eligible to compete for all Sun Belt titles in 2014, according a person familiar with the negotiations.

After accepting an invitation to join, the conference is requiring that Georgia Southern declare its intention to the NCAA to move from the FCS level to the FBS level by June 1. Doing so will meet the NCAA’s deadline to be eligible to play on the FBS level by 2014, but it will also mean that the Eagles will be ineligible to compete for the FCS football championship in 2013.

Congrats on your move up. Hope you can help give GA State some attendance help. Also, would love for my team, the Rice Owls, to come to Statesboro and play sometime. I don't get to see my Owls much around these parts.
Why can't the new be eligible for the conference title right away? I don't like the transition rules. You are punishing the current players for some thing didn't they didn't do.
This year's team has plenty to play for, like an undefeated season, and setting the foundation for the move up. They're a huge part of this move being successful, and they won't ever be forgotten because of that. It is indeed a trade off. However it is a good trade off. I would bet that if tou took a vote most of those players would vote to move now and not put off the transition process.
Plus, hopefully we can get a winnable FBS game as a12th, and the class of 2013 can go down in history as the first gsu team to beat a FBS school. There is a whole lot to play for this year.

12th game needed v. a FBS team. This team deserves a shot at history. True guineas.
I have been hearing they are working on a 12th game with Hawaii as a way to honor the seniors as well.
Congrats to the Eagles !
