...in the MEAC tournament. By Saturday afternoon, Gonzaga and Memphis could be the only two teams in the country to run the table in conference.
A team that was 16-0 in conference will now be in the NIT. #fail

It does seem strange, but I guess the MEAC is really that bad.

MTSU's and Norfolk St's situation shows that one-bid leagues should eliminate conference tourneys. Otherwise, the regular season is a waste.
I think regular season champs should get the auto bid.
Winning is hard
they turned around and lost their tournament opener 03-banghead apparently another team in their league only lost once, and they lost their tournament opener as well.
Any conference with a tournament should be able to choose which team gets the auto-bid, either the regular season or tournament champ and this shouldn't have to be decided beforehand. It can be a quick vote right after the last game in the tournament is played. The team that doesn't go of course gets the NIT auto-bid if there's a different regular and tournament champion and not otherwise awarded an NCAA at-large bid.

They should reduce them to 6 teams (the NCAA minimum), place them on the regular season champion's homecourt and give the top two seeds byes. Also keep in mind that few conferences play true round robins, injuries affect conference standings and teams grow as the season goes on so perhaps even though a school is the 2nd or 3rd seed they may possibly be the best team and most dangerous NCAA Tourney first round opponent the league can offer.

But it's not as bad as it used to be for these teams because at least they get to play in the NIT before whereas before they generally didn't get any reward.
Conference tournaments are a waste of time.
I just got in from the MEAC tournament --- I enjoy watching Norfolk State game ... and this will nuke the attendance. Hampton will have some but not nearly enough to really boom.
Without the bid going to the tourney winner...attendance and passion at the smaller conference tourneys would be pretty absent.

Obviously television pushes this.

A better solution might be to limit the teams that can compete for the title. That would not save a 16-0 Norfolk State from falling short, but if they did lose, it would be to a team with an argument to compete for the crown.

And lowering the number of teams would still allow for the championship week.

The hook needs to be there. The NIT tried to soften a team like Norfolk State losing by automatically having them in that tourney, which, while not the NCAA, still carries some value (and television).
its a money thing, so conference tournies are here to stay. There is no motivation for a team like Syracuse, who is already in, to try and win 4 games in 4 days. I've heard many coaches on the radio say they wouldn't be upset if they go out early because it gives them an extra week of rest.
I think a team that wins it's regular season and conference tourney should get an autobid, no questions asked. If two teams split those titles then the committee should have the option to choose one or the other for the autobid. That way all of the conferences still get a bid, the regular season still means something, the conference tourney still has incentive and above all, the Tourney itself would have a better field.

Or do what the OVC does, and give your first two seeds byes all the way to the semi-finals. That way your first two seeds just need to win two games.

On the other hand, if you can't TCOB in the conference tournament, and you have a crap record out of conference, you can't blame anyone but yourself for not getting into the tournament.

With all due respect... and remember I'm saying this with all due respect. That is a HORRIBLE idea... would you really want our Tourney hopes in the hands of CUSA? They already took the conference tourney out of Memphis, just think if they had the opportunity to keep us out of the NCAAs...
In respect to Norfolk State, they went 16-0 and North Carolina Central went 15-1. And if I'm looking at their conference schedules correctly...... they never played each other. I guess if you set up your conference schedule so that two teams don't have at least one game against each other, you can't really crown a regular season champ.
