As pointed out by Brett McMurphy on twitter:

Quote:Two reasons it stayed together was Dave Gavitt and Mike Tranghese. When they were gone, that was the signal of the end of the Big East, in my mind. They got things done. They didn't let presidents make stupid decisions, which is what presidents do when they get in charge of things they don't know anything about.

From ESPN article, "Last Call For A Garden Party"

Fairly strong criticism for the university presidents, Marinatto, and Aresco. I think one thing we can all agree on is that there has been a lack of direction and a lack of leadership since Tranghese left.

04-bow
Wasn't the president decision-making shift made in the early to mid-1990s from the ADs? Sounds like the destruction has been a long time coming. Common knowledge that the presidents over the years were just as guilty of running things into the ground as any leadership issues of Marinatto and now Aresco.
IMO, more so with Miami, BC and Tech leaving. 2/3 were premier football schools.
That was under Tranghese. But Meatball was stupid. He never called out the critics
or the ACC's awful BCS bowl record compared to the Big East, and the Big East took
shots from all of the media.
Long, long, long ago any shred of respect I had for Jim Boeheim vanished. Boeheim's a great coach, but he's a class-A jerk and it shows.

The BE was a basketball conference in which some members also played football. In retrospect, almost everyone agrees that the BE venturing into FB like it did was a mistake. Some will say that the real tragedy was that (Joe) Paterno's "Eastern" conference never happened. Others will say that probably what should have happened is that the BE should have followed the A10's example and either allowed FB playing members to float elsewhere or find somewhere else to house their FB programs. But either way, the very way the BE was structured only had one outcome...

Looking back at conference history I think what people will say is that the BE was a "jack of all trades and master of none." Gavitt wanted a Basketball conference and ultimately that's what the driving force of the BE got. Miami and VTech left because they knew FB was never going to get a real hearing in the BE; Boston College likewise left a year later. When UC, USF, and Louisville were added, the decision was made to add more non-FB schools (Marquette and DePaul) to make sure that the FB playing schools would never have a majority. That sealed the deal and the clock was ticking until Pitt and 'Cuse pulled the trigger. WVU bailed out and then Louisville.

The tragedy was that CUSA was originally formed in the BE model. Who remembers the "Red, White, and Blue" divisions that included teams like Saint Louis, New Orleans, and UNC Charlotte? (To answer an earlier question, yeah, UC *could* get excited playing UNCC because we have history with them too...) It was (the original CUSA) a basketball conference, some of whose members also played FB.... One wonders what could have been done with CUSA if the FB aspect had been the driving force early on...

Well nostalgia's nice. Someone should remind Jim Boeheim that it's also in the past.

The BE almost fell apart in 03 and Tranghese was in charge. He simply got lucky the moves stopped when they did. Had the Big added 2 and the SEC 2 and the ACC went to 14 at that time he would have been screwed as well. He set up the 8-8 deal that was never going to survive long term.
Boeheim, like many big time, long term, legend coaches thinks he is bigger than the University he represents. Class A-1 jerk whose resume isn't as impressive as its made out to be if you peel back the onion. Compare it to say - Knight, Calhoun, Donovan, Coach K - the list could go on.

Nice commentary BearcatJerry.

. . . and a good summary of what Aresco never understood his real job was when he took over. . . just never understood the conference culture that even most of the newbies understood from the beginning.

The 8-8 deal was set up specifically to ALLOW the two sides to split with no consequences in 2010. It was the football schools who were too weak to follow through in 2010 because they didn't want to be in an all-sports league with each other. They wanted to go to the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten instead. Well a year later they started getting what they wanted, and left the Catholic schools with a bunch of CUSA backfills which was never in the plan, and the hoops side exercised their power to split under the 8-8 deal. I have said many times that the football schools in the Northeast have been stabbing each other in the back since the 1970s. This result was bound to happen eventually.
