Crossposted from the Sun Belt board. Rumors also that Benson is trying to convince Sun Belt presidents to bring Liberty on board with App/Ga. Southern.
So it begins...
I wouldn't touch Liberty with a 10 foot pole. There is a reason they have never moved from the Big South.
Liberty is about 3:00 away from getting to the NCAA tourney with a 15-20 record.

Liberty is toxic because of the views of a dead man. The bottom line is academically speaking they've gotten the same certifications and are accredited.
Liberty hasn't moved because they've not invested in athletics until very recently.

Political correctness is a funny thing. Liberty has received much of its negative reputation from many who harbor radical views on the other end of the political spectrum.
I agree that Falwell is the big road block keeping Liberty from moving up. Their location isn't ideal either. Spending shouldn't be an issue though. Their budget last year was $30 million. It's grown tremendously from $3 million in 2003, but the escalation has been occurring for a while. They were at $12.5 million back in 2005 and jumped to $20 million in 2007. (This is according to dept of Ed data) Falwell loved athletics and he opened up the wallet for them. If I remember right, he went on a spree years ago firing everyone, the AD, coaching staffs, etc because they weren't a nationally ranked program.
Its not just the late Jerry Falwell and his views. You should take 10 mins and just look into Liberty. Ive also had a few run ins with Liberty Students, alums/grads. Here are just a few thing Ive been told by those:

1. Gays and Minorities should be deported
2. The US should only have one religion and those who have different views should be jailed
3. Religion should be taught in all schools

Yep there is more. I know this may not be the place for this kind of discussion but I also read that Liberty has a museum on campus with Dinosaur fossils that are labeled as 3,000 years old. If this is true then they should lose all accreditation for this alone.

That's pretty much Falwell. He founded the school and controlled all aspects until his death. It looks like him. I'm pretty familiar with Liberty.

His son Jerry Falwell Jr is president/chancellor now. He holds the same views. He just isn't as vocal about it.

Liberty has 56K students. Most are online students. They have 9K on campus and another 3K that live in or around Lynchburg VA. Out of those 9K on campus I would say 80-85% probably think that the earth is 4-6 thousand years old.
It's a little irresponsible painting an entire base with a broad brush though. There are zealots with different schools of thought on every campus, you guys just don't agree with Falwell, and I didn't agree with alot of what he stood for, truthfully I thought he was everything that was wrong and divisive in all parts of Christianity, but people like him exist everywhere.
Now, for the three things,

1. I've had family and friends attend and graduate from Liberty, none of them share those views on homosexuality/minorities. It's not to say that people at Liberty don't feel that, but there are people at every university in the country with those views.

2. See number one. There's stupid people everywhere who don't believe in the U.S. Constitution. Those people should be sent to Gitmo on treason charges.

3. I agree 100 percent with this. Creationism should be taught right alongside evolution, big bang and every other theory. Also, if as an ELECTIVE ONLY course if a student should have an interest in Religious studies, we should offer that as an educational opportunity, but it can't be discriminatory. Generalized romp in the field courses studying the various types of religion in the world isn't a bad thing, and if the need/desire is there from a student body to want certain types of directed religious studies - meaning a Christian based class, Muslim based class or whatever and there's someone who can come up with the scope and sequence and deliver the information without interjecting personal beliefs then yes, teach it. Schools are supposed to be about learning and diversity, even if we don't necessarily agree with their opinions.
