Didn't sell it today
No chance. Would be shocked at this point if the conference kept the name.

This is a process, selling the name is one issue of many regarding the split. The end game is a rebrand with a conference stacked with a lot of cash and an ESPN deal that gets conference on national TV. Remember rebranding saves this conference from the original member issue when UConn leaves. The incoming schools will be considered original members from a media standpoint helping perception.

Yeah but see I like saying ECU is in the Big East.

I would rule nothing out at this point. The minute you try and predict the outcome, some new twist comes up.
We won't keep the name but I'm encouraged that it appears we're trying to squeeze every last dime from the C7/Fox.

We hold the trump cards in the negotiation. Worst case scenario for us is a court battle and playing another season with them. Whatever agreement is made needs to make them question whether the agreement is even worth it.
The name is sold, it is just a matter of how much. It should have been non negotiable. We should have kept it.
Like anything that happens with this conference, I'm still looking for how ESPN profits by allowing FOX to acquire "Big East" basketball. Until I figure out how ESPN "wants" the C7 to have the Big East name and play on FOX, I'm going to believe it's possible the football schools keep the name.
Yes, I still think there is a chance. I have seen nothing that the deal is finalized. The sources for the articles that say the name will be sold are probably from the C7 because they want it so bad. I've heard they leaked this info in an effort to speed up the process of getting BE name.
I say let em leave early with no exit fee and we keep the name
I honestly don't think it matters. Old name, new name doesn't matter.
I seriously doubt it.
I think we sell it for the right price. I have gone back and forth on the issue and not really sure what the right move would be.
#1 I can see the idea that its a known name so no need to rebrand and it has a history.
#2. I can also see the constant comparisons to what the league used to be and its old members and AQ status. So it would be a constant put down as a league that has been lowered in status.

I can see it more valuable to the C7 since they have been part of it longer and te basketball brand name still has luster to it.
The name will go, only question is what does the BE or remaining 3 get for it.
I think something seismic would have to happen to get to keep the name.
Wonder how the name issue impacts a recruits decision. Sure us adults dont mind takin on the "Big Metro" or "Big Atlantic" whatever.... But for a 17yo who knows the Big East brand, whether it truly is the historical big east or just a borrowed name, i think its a big deal. Its an ego bump for the kids to say they playing in the Big East, to have the logo on the jersey. From everything i've read, just having that selling point improved ECU's recruiting in the closing months. I say keep it. People and ESPiN will whine about it for a few months but by next signing day it will be a mute point. And our recruiting classes, WHICH IS HOW WE WIN ON THE FIELD, won't take a hit. Cant say that when you tell a 3-4 star kid he'll be wearing the Big Atlantic logo on his jersey.

True
Yes. We should keep it.

Thats the challenge...as probably some Presidents and maybe even a few AD's are blinded by $$$ signs (i.e. Catholic 7 forfeit their NCAA credits worth millions of $$$$ in order to keep Big East name)...while incoming or current Big East Football & Basketball Coaches are probably "freaking out" about losing the Big East Brand name to use on the recruiting trail...as for those coaches, the extra millions of $$$ won't be worth the recruiting challenge that faces them in "starting up" a new conf with a new name.

Here's how the main conf initially started up and notice how the "Big East" is actually the newbie on the block:

Big Ten: (started up in 1896)

Big 12 (originally Big 8 with teams from the SWC..started up in 1907)

SEC (started up in 1933...many schools started up in another conf in 1922)

ACC (started up in 1953)

Pac-12 (started up in 1959)

Big East (Basketball in 1979, Football in 1991)

Those are the only 6 main conferences any recruit knows today.

Good luck if one has to "start all over" (hence why Catholic 7 are offering up mega $$$$$ to keep the Big East name).
I hope I am wrong but if (1) Tulane, Memphis, SMU, ECU, Houston and UCF don't get a vote and if (2) UConn, USF and Cincinatti keep all the money, the name will unquestionably be sold. The temptation for a quick cash grab is too much for the "remaining 3" to resist, especially when 2 of the 3 hope they are leaving soon anyway. I feared this possibility two months ago. Fox, ESPN and the C-7 have used the principles of greed and divide and conquer masterfully.

My last remaining hope is that the new name will not be something suck-assed like "Metro" or "Big America". "EAC" hac the tone of diginity and collegiate tradition that is needed.
Name change is a foregone conclusion, and I really don't understand the fasination with "METRO". Has fail written all over it.
