From where I sit, the Metro Conference had a proud basketball history. Louisville, Memphis State, UAB was good, Cincinatti were all strong, successful basketball programs in the Metro. Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Florida State and Virginia Tech all left to join BCS-AQ conferences. It wasn't a "mid-major" conference--we didn't have that term back then, but even if we did, the Metro was as strong as anybody except the Big East and ACC, at least in my memory.

Yet a lot of posters--especially Memphis posters, it seems--practically spit at the mention of the name. I don't get it. Can anyone explain?
At this point I would take the Metro over Conference America or some other crazy name they would come up with.
I think Metro Conference is a great name.
It sounds gay.

No. It looks gay, but it's not.
What about trying something innovative for the football schools like Barclay's League?

Corporate Sponsorship of the conference name would be an innovative way to go. Ten year naming rights at 1-2 million per school.

Harrah's East....

Well, for starters, the name immediately brings to mind the term "metrosexual". Plus the Metro was a basketball conference. It has ZERO football history, credibility, or name recognition with football fans. Even in basketball the name is useless. The average recruit was all of 2 years old when the Metro disbanded. If there was any value left in that ancient brand the C7 would have snapped it up. They didn't because there isn't.
If Rumors of selling Big East name are true then Big Metro Conference would be much better than Conference America.
Metro sounds urban, urban sounds northeastern, not very reflective of the schools. They need to come up with something better than that.
BIG 11

UAB was/is a strong, successful basketball program, but was never in the Metro.
Southern Miss was a member from '82-'95.

Seriously, is that still a "thing"? IS the Queer Eye show even on the air anymore? So are half the subways in the world gay?

Which is true of any new name.

This is true. It's to some extent reviving a dead brand.

No, we didn't because
1. We're staying with the established name we've had for 30 years
2. None of our members had ANY history in the Metro. (Correction: Apparently SLU did.)

You guys, on the other hand, have Memphis, Cincinnati, Tulane and USF.

It's not my conference, but I'd rather have the Metro Conference name than anything else you're likely to end up with. Metro had some history of success, even if it wasn't in football and it was a long time ago.

"Big 11" or "Eastern 12/10/11" are generic enough that they neither help nor hurt.

"Conference America" or "Big American Conference" are awful. "Great American Conference" might have been okay, but right now the last thing you guys need is to buy the name from a Division II conference.

Houston, DAllas, Tampa, Orlando, New Orleans, Memphis--Urban. Metro.
The new league should be called "The Other Guys". With everything that's gone bad for Cincinnati with realignment, I am at least looking forward to playing Memphis regularly in basketball again.
I don't think the Metro name carries much cache. They would be better off coming up with a new name and starting something that is entirely their own.
Not all the schools are in metropolitain locations. I'm tired of conferences having names that aren't correct. The Big 10 and Big 12 aren't 10 or 12. The ACC isn't all coastal states. The Big East isn't all eastern. Find a name that doesn't conflict with reality.

Personally--Ive come to the reluctant conclusion that its probably time to just cut our loses with the Big East. Its in a death spiral and cant seem to get out of its own way. Now that even the name is gone, Im hoping our leadership will finally realize that the current path may no longer be the best path for us. This path leads back to square one, day one, of CUSA in 1996. Do we really want to start all over again?
Is Navy still joining? I don't even know what the league looks like anymore.
