Full Version: Joe had a good explanation today about our loss to ASU

He mentioned it's hard for young players to understand the sense of urgency in playing at this level. He compared it to studying for a test two weeks out. You have plenty of time, so most people aren't in a hurry to study, but if the test were tomorrow, there would be a sense of urgency to study.

He said ASU had three Seniors who had lost to UALR quite a few times in their career, and this is their last year to beat us, whereas our young players probably feel like they still have several years, so there's no sense of urgency. I asked Joe if week to week scholarships would create a sense of urgency for our players. He laughed and said he'd have Chris bring it up at the next conference meeting.04-cheers
Not the only reason, of course, but what he says probably is true.

No, I doubt it too. I didn't see the ASU game, but from the comments on the board from those who did, it sounds like that they are just better than we are, and made us look bad. I expect a much closer and more competive game here, but am not optimistic about a win for our guys.
I don't know what the deal is, or if something happened during or after the game that we don't know about, but Joe is no big fan of ASU, and he really wants to win that game. I wonder if he and Brady might have had some words? I have no information as to anything out of the ordinary happening, but there was something more than just a good rivalry game going on. Might have been the flagrant foul that caused Taggart's concussion.

It may have something to do with the anti-hog mentality they have up there. No telling what those fans up there say to Joe or about him at the game. I noticed there were quite a few of them on their board that were willing to hire Nolan Richardson when Nutt was fired, and even some thought they might get Bobby Petrino this year. Some even think he was offered the job, and would have taken it but his wife wanted to get the hell out of Dodge(Arkansas). Of course a lot of others were opposed to both. But, there were some who were willing to forgive and forget if they could get a winner up there.

It has nothing to do with any "anti-hog" mentality from the fans. A couple of years ago at the tournament in Hot Springs Brady and Kleine had an exchange of words on the sidelines...thinking that Brady may have even gotten a technical over it. Not really sure what was said but there's been bad blood ever since.
Thanks. I guess that explains it.
Once upon a time UALR had a coach who boasted he'd have a program at UALR that was better than UA. After an NCAA appearance there were bumper stickers that read UALR, Arkansas' NCAA Team.

Funny thing is back then UALR drew some really nice crowds. Sometimes barking rather than rolling over and showing your belly is what is needed to get fan respect.

I know Joe pisses Brady off royally with the way he is out on the court so much yelling.

But on the upside, I was able to buy three tickets in section 111 row 7, so see y'all Saturday.

That's what I've been saying for several years, and other than myself, it took an ASU fan to see that too. Until the dog is big enough to bite, he has to bark loud to get attention. Since Newell left, we haven't had a coach with any bark or bite. He did a lot of talking when he came, and then his team did the talking on the court. Of course he was cocky, but he got peoples attention, he won big, and we had good crowds. Sure he pissed of some people, mainly Razorback fans, but did what a coach was hired to do, win. Now, the administration at UALR is afraid they are going to offend the people that control the University of Arkansas. system.

What I don't understand arkstfan, is Brady would be pissed off at Joe or any other coach who is competitive, and is up and yelling at his players. I could understand if Joe was yelling at Brady or ASU players.
Joe spoke to a group today and answered that question. He said he doesn't really know Brady. But said he was a very good coach, but that he and Coach Brady were alike in that they're very competitive and don't like to lose. He said UALR and ASU compete for everything alike. They go after the same players, space in the newspapers, and are in the same conference. That's why they're always rubbing each other the wrong way. They're just competing every day for the same things. Joe is a very entertaining speaker.

When did LRU enter the Fayetteville system?

I've never heard him speak, but I enjoy hearing him on the post game show. He's very knowledgeable about the game. I also enjoy hearing Coach Lee on the post game shows. He also is very knowledgeable. I've never met Joe but he seems like a nice guy. That was what I was thinking, that both he and Brady are competitors and don't like to lose. I agree with Joe, that Brady is a very good coach.

Brady has some old school thoughts.

He's one of those guys who thinks only the head coach needs to jaw at refs or be up and about.
