If my "read" is correct, he had better grab whatever BCS offer comes along because time is NOT on his side in this process. You think he will be hired away from WKU after the 2014 season, and I think if not by 2015, he may well be there or a comparable school to retirement. Now we are talking being hired as a FBHC by a BCS school, not an assistant.

Maybe not that fast, but I tend to agree. He's a weasel, but he's a helluva football coach. All it takes is one BCS team willing to sacrifice a little self-respect to win, and I'm guessing there are more than one.

A school far away from the epicenter of the matter.

Oregon flops this year following Kelly's departure.

I'm putting in my prediction for Petrino to become a Duck.

I don't know. Oregon seems to have a ton of faith in that assistant they hired. There is still a ton of talent on that roster. I would be pretty surprised if that team fell apart just because Kelly left.

Arkansas had faith that they would do well last year too.

Started in season ranked #10. Didn't turn out well.

And i believe he will grab any BCS offer that comes along. Some team like Illinois, Indiana, etc will hire him away after one year. They will say he has shown remorse and is a changed man.

Even though we know differently...

That's not quite the same thing.

You are right. Arkansas hired a temporary interim replacement at the last minute, while Oregon hired somebody that they feel is going to be there a while and continue to have success.

However, you can't underestimate the effects of a coach leaving and a new coach coming in can have on a program that is on a roll.
Oregon hired a trusted assistant from within the program. Arkansas hired John L. Smith. The comparison isn't even close. I think a bad year for Oregon would be losing 4 games.

Oregon + Phil Knight + Nike = Success
Starting with Joey Harrington in Time Square and improving under Chip Kelly.
Sure, a new coach will always change the dynamic, at least a little.

But that's not what happened at Arkansas. They had what they thought was a pretty nice machine put together, then suddenly they're introducing a complete wild card to the deck.

At least Oregon knows what it's getting. Or at least a pretty good idea.
I see Neil Callaway moving to WKU as a dream scenario. Petrino moves on to a new gig by 2015, and CNC is left in charge of the hilltoppers.

So they poached a few recruits and coaches - does that really justify the Nuclear Option?
will always respect him for getting the player's grades together, remember they're STUDENT athletes. Also, agree that he took a HC job a little bit too soon, hope he does well(unless they play us then screw em).
Too soon? The man is in his 50s and had been an assistant for decades. It wasn't too soon. Some people just don't have the skills for the next level.

It has been said that sometimes the right man is chosen for the wrong job (for him). UAB is still waiting to find out if we have "the right man in the right job" as we move into 2013. We are hoping for an affirmative answer this year. Coaching history is littered with those who failed in one place and succeeded at another (or vice versa).

03-lmfao I love that last sentence. I respectfully disagree with "he took a hc job a little too soon." He was an assistant for over 20 years, was he not?

A "red flag" went up with me in reference to why he was an assistant for so long and never got a whiff or sniff at a head coaching job all that time, and now all of a sudden, he's "good enough" for UAB?

After him and Ellis Johnson, I'd be very careful about hiring sec "career assistants.."
Neil Callaway > Ellis Johnson

Granted, that low on the head coaching ranking scale, the delineations between them start to get pretty damned blurry. 03-lol
Wow. Is Ellis worse than Zero ?
less than.
