2. Barton County Community College: Snyder and his staff got knee-deep in the muck at Barton, a junior college program that cheated worse than any Division I school ever could. Along with Clemons, other Barton products to sign with Snyder included Randy Pulley and Robert Whaley. Pulley was eventually kicked out of school. And Whaley? Here you go.

3. Robert Whaley: Winning the recruiting battle for Whaley was a bad thing for Snyder. Whaley never played for the Tigers -- he was released from his scholarship after standing trial for rape in 2001 (it ended in a mistrial) before his freshman year -- but he never should have been recruited in the first place. Even before he was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl, Whaley's baggage was enormous. Put it like this: A Division I school that wanted Robert Whaley in 2001 was a Division I school begging for the NCAA to investigate. And it's not like Snyder stumbled onto Whaley. No, he hashed out a long-term -- and not admirable -- plan to land him.

Funny - we took him.

Nan officially showed up on campus about 1 1/2 months after the Whale. Gurantee ya that for a few months leading up to her hiring she had a very keen interest in the goings on around Clifton.

Don't think for one minute that she did not take note of the eyebrows that were raised when we brought in Whaley. Enormously bad judgement on our part. Media both local and national didn't put that one in such a positive light. We all argued that that was b.s. (mainly because this team was completely devoid of a talented 5 and was desperate for a skilled 6'10" player).
We took a future NBA power forward...how dumb. Who is to say in his second year what he might have achieved here, both as a player and a person.

I really can't wait til we load up with all these academic and intellectual giants just knocking down the door to be apart of UC/21.

IMO, people are in for a rude awakening.

He did not go to class here and was nothing but trouble for the basketball team. I'm not sure what he was going to achieve.

All he wanted to do was play basketball. He found a place for that and I guess it got him to the NBA.
He never once got in trouble in his time at UC.

He had problems in 1 class and was home for the summer trying to make the money to pay for the class himself during the first summer session. His only failure there was not discussing it with Goins after Huggs was suspended.
Whaley was not aloud on the team his senior year for image reasons. Sure he may have been a distraction during parts of the year for the team, but he never did anything in his time to embaress the university.

I am getting old and my memory is slipping. I don't remember Whaley getting into any trouble off the court at UC. I remember Huggs playing mind games with him by suspending him to get him to practice harder but I don't remember any trouble off the court.

I didn't want UC to sign him when they did but he never got in trouble at UC. I do not understand why posters continue to bash Whaley on here.
Props to Whaley he is in the NBA making a living and beside a minor skirmish at a nightclub it looks like he might have straightened his life out.

Did I say he got in trouble off the court?

I'm not talking about criminal trouble. Goodness knows we would have known about that. He did not play much either because of his attitude or how he got along and never turned into what Huggins and or UC hoped prior to leaving.

I'm not going to tell you again, the man's name is GOIN not Goins. ;-)

It's pretty said that people on here bash players after they leave because they didn't live up to their expectations.

What bashing? I'm stating facts. Did I say Whaley is a bad person? How is this considered bashing?
Fan,
That is were I and many others will probably always disagree. I don't hold Huggs accountable for taking chances on guys. Some suceeded, some failed. I can't speak for the facts about the Whale while he was here, I ust don't have a problem with Hugs taking a chance.

On the last point, I am eagerly awaiting who we get as a coach and what caliber of player he gets...despite Phil's delusions, we are not going to compete in the BEast with Doellman type players. X doesn't even compete well in the A-10, so this idea we are going to snag 6'10" academic all-americans who run like a deer and take quarters off the top of the backboard is rich.

I am sticking with GROIN

I guess somebody must have stole your password and logged in

Can somebody look up Webster's definition of FACT and Tack it to the top of the board?

Zara, I respect your position. I'm also smart enough (I think) to know that many college teams in the NCAA have a player or 2 that the coach may be taking a chance on or is willing to let some things slip by. From what I read there are several in the BE alone. But I contend that it's mostly for the sake of winning, not just to make them a better person. Maybe I'm naive about that, but it's my opinion. Look at the pressure on college coaches to win. Maybe that has something to do with all the drinking going on.

Now if the player becomes a better person in the process, that's great - and it happened under Huggins.
Huggs isnt the one that signs the LOI. So before anybody bashes Huggs, bash the school. Because if they didnt want Whaley here, he wouldnt of been here.

Why was he kicked off the team? Please enlighten me on the facts. And saying Nancy wanted him gone is not a fact either.

So when he and Huggs both said the same thing they were both lying?
Why your at it tells us how Hicks and Bobbit were nothing but trouble for Huggins. They both quit the team and were called out by Huggins for not practing hard early on at UC.

I guess the difference is Hicks and Bobbit turned it around and became good players for UC and Whaley didn't do anything before he left.

Whaley was nothing but trouble for Huggs and UC.
I guess that is why Huggins helped him get into Walsh and didn't want to lose Whaley.
My last post on this.

I am truly happy for Robert Whaley. I met him at Montgomery Inn and spoke to him when his knee was hurt and he seemed like a good guy. It seems like he is doing well and I hope it continues.
