Hard to believe this conference turned the ESPN offer down. Big mistake, but no use to grind that...
I see it going one of two ways --- either Navy doesn't come or they come in all sports (since they can compete now).

Oh, almost forgot to ask - are there any fellow suffers of Miscalulated Feces here? Thinking about starting a support group.
Who cares (besides GA)? I'd rather settle with UMass and Tulsa and have a nice and clean 12 member all sports conference.
I am shocked that we are looking at a 20mil a year deal, shocked.

I agree. If Navy comes then Army should come, and they should come for the two major sports. Now that the West Coast thing didn't work out, we need to be a 12 team all sports conference. Period.

Tulsa is in I think. Small school but great history in football and basketball.
I hope Navy backs out. They obviously don't bring the TV value we were promised. I would rather Tulsa be added as #11 and Southern Miss as #12.

Before Tulane and East Carolina were added to the Big East, I was really hoping to distance ourselves from as many CUSA schools as possible, just in an effort to move forward. That being said I was hoping that we could keep games with Tulane and So Miss going forward. I do think Tulane brings value to the league. Not sure about So Miss or East Carolina demographics in a league that was supposed to be "Metro" by design.

At this point, we should be grateful to be separated from what C-USA has become, not necessarily from all of those who are in the current version of C-USA. When it comes to football, Houston, East Carolina, Tulsa and Southern Miss have all been good the last 10 years or so (for the most part). We need the best football we can find. That is why I have no problem with Tulsa or USM.
Everyone thinks that we were idiots for turning down ESPN. Do people not realize that ESPN's attorneys had provisions for reducing payment or getting out of the Agreement if teams left or Conference changed as it has? We would still be very close to same situation even if we had taken the ESPN offer...

Some will also say that Memphis might not be in the Big East today if that contract was signed. That is conjecture and I'm not sure if it is totally accurate, but it's something to think about.

I don't think that the offer would have changed Rutger's, Syracuse's or Pitt's mind. West Virginia was already gone. Louisville probably wouldn't have left, nor would the C7 have left if there was a decent TV deal.

With Rutgers, Syracuse & Pitt gone, I expect we would have still gotten an invite. There was a lobby to invite basketball schools (that also played football). Memphis & Temple were the best available candidate on that front.

Southern Miss was in the Metro....

I'm curious why the Naval Academy cares about money.
I would like to have Navy and Army for football only... Then add Tulsa and UMass or S. Miss all sports. ECU would be added in all sports as well. I think that would be 12 all sports and 14 for football. Just some random thoughts

I agree. I can live with those schools. But when you look at CUSA with UNCC (football for the most part), FIU, FAU, MTSU, Texas-San Antonio (or whatever they are) and La. Tech we have always been in a conference way above those programs. The NBE is better than being left behind in CUSA.

I don't get your logic. You talk about not getting left behind but CUSA would not have added those teams if Memphis and others hadn't left for the Big East.

3601, I'm one of those making the assertion MEMPHIS would NOT have been invited to the BEC if that $155mm/year TV deal had been signed back in fall 2011.

Pitt and Syracuse were in cahoots with the ACC to sabatoge the offer; they were in process of departing. TCU had just joined the BEC but was invited to the Big XII. As others noted, WVU was about to receive a Big XII invite. So those four were leaving.

The left these all sports schools - UL, UC, USF, Rutgers, UConn.

The Big East, armed with a deal that paid full members $11mm/year, would have picked the best 4 schools from this list:
BYU - probable FB only but not a bad BB team
Boise State - major FB addition and ideal western partner for BYU
Houston - was enjoying that BCS bowl buster season
UCF - huge upside; solid athletics, 4th largest enrollment in USA
SMU - June Jones and old Dallas money families
Temple - Eastern school with good BB; negative was Nova block
So Miss - lone negative is location
Tulane - New Orleans but overall sports programs dismal
MEMPHIS - Porter's last year pretty tough; BB on upside

BYU would turn the offer down. UCF would be blocked by USF. I really think Boise State (FB only), Houston, SMU, and Temple would have been invited.

UCF would have been invited assuming Rutgers still took the B!G invite last November. I am unsure if Louisville would have taken the ACC invitation. Adding Boise would have really bolstered FB and the BB still would be really good with Georgetown, Nova, Marquette, Notre Dame, Temple, UConn, etc.

So the Big East FB schools for 2013 would be Louisville, Cincinnati, Boise State, Temple, Connecticut, UCF, USF, SMU, and Houston.

MEMPHIS would be getting ready for this new C-USA line up for 2013:
East - MEMPHIS, Marshall, ECU, UAB, Middle Tenn, Florida Atlantic
West - So Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP, North Texas
Memphis would have still been in the nBE if the contract a couple of years ago was signed, because that would not have prevented Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU from leaving. Even with a $50M exit fee, teams are leaving the ACC for the B10, so Rutgers would be gone as well. WIth all of that, we would be back to where we are now, other than we would likely be locked into whatever ESPN downgraded the media rights to. So the one positive about the contract never being inked is that the nBE probably has a bit more flex in defining a new contract to maximize exposure, something that ESPN would have never done.
