Yep. I upgraded the facilities at JSU. Stadium seats just over 24k Luxury suites nicer than what is in tuscalooser.

Exactly. And that ain't gonna change. That's why they put up no fight over McGee. It didn't matter to them. They have what they want and now the cycle perpetuates itself with very little effort on their part.
My point is that it is that this is the first time I've seen it written in stories about why recruits aren't actually coming here. THAT is different than before. It's one thing to talk about it amongst ourselves, but quite another to READ about it...

There's no doubt in anyone's mind UAB needs an OCS. Not even in those that are keeping us from having one.

Bless their sniveling, cowardly, backward, thin-skinned, racist, animal-abusing, ambulance-chasing, politician-buying, knuckle-dragging hearts.

You left out squirrel-buggering.
Wow, we are our own worst enemy. We lost some recruits, it happens. The article says as much about early playing time as facilities. We've had many players chose UAB over USM or Troy and several bigger schools. The coaches can't even comment on recruits, a lot of what we hear is second hand or speculation, yet we take it as the end of the world. I'd love to have an on campus stadium and I'm sure it would be a great recruiting tool, but this "we're doomed without one" is getting old. Other fan bases don't need to bash us, because we will do it ourselves. How about waiting to see where we end up on signing day rather than doing our best to help everyone else recruit.

I thought the same. Maybe I'm wrong.

+1

Not losing sleep over the last couple of decommits.

QB/Mullens- Southern Miss lost two QB to transfer and their QB commit/ he was on his way to 1-AA ball
RB/McCall- I think Howard commiting scared him off plushe's playing CB at Troy
WR/Foy- is at a JuCo/Green- left to play safety
OL/Horst- He was small but we've lately been in on three OL
DE/Robinson- We are switching to the 3-4 he probably was gone after that decision
CB/Hart- he's small didnt have many offers/Smith I thought was a good one don't know what happened with him
Saf/Jenkins- he's a CB to some probably a better CB/Dixon- he's going to a JuCo

Could be they see trophies and other stuff at these stadiums to show tradition and right now the only thing UAB can do is tell a recruit that they can be a start to one. Other thing with recruiting look at some trends.
Oh good gawd. Another of the "we are so stupid crowd..."

I'm not losing sleep re: the player either... It's the print.

This is our board. It is OK to commiserate. I and some of the fellow blazer fans have made observations regarding the lack of OCS and losing recruits. Yes, it happens. Forgive me, jj, if I make an observation that the lack of our OCS has actually been reported as a reason for a recruit going elsewhere. I pointed that out as written fact. Your hyperbole about the end of the world is NOT what I nor anyone else on here typed. I'm not bashing "US..."

Playing a 3-4 this year should be great

I don't like it being a Cowboys fan glad somewhat JJ made the switch, but I hope it works I can kinda read what CGM is doing somewhat. As for Kalvin he's not big enough for a DE in the 3-4 for my liking could've been a great OLB at least in run support with his size. When he decommited I though he probably just wanted to play DE in the 4-3.

I'm not singling out anybody in particular and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I gave mine. Facilities where one of the things mentioned. I didn't read anyone saying that is the sole reason they left. I'm sure we've gotten players because we were not small town USA and lost some for the same reason.
OCS isn't what stuck out to me in that article.

USM: Winning tradition and offense that fits QB
Troy: Winning tradition and opportunity to play early
WKU: Winning trend, and winning coach
Irregardless of why they decommitted, we are still being left behind our conference mates/competition in all facilities for the most part from classrooms to dorms to athletic buildings. Where will all the new students that they want us to bring in go to class, study or sleep. While there's been some improvement there on the academic side & to a smaller degree athletic side, we will have always have a hard time competing in the current market until things drastically improve.
NO PLAYER is going to say terrible things about a school they had, after all, committed to earlier. We are trying to interpret points that may be read "between the lines" to try to get a grip on what REALLY happened - IF POSSIBLE. When one reads between the lines, one is guessing as to what was actually meant by the given comments. We already know some of the facility problems at UAB so we are sensitive to that suggestion. What we want to know from these comments is whether UAB needs to do something NOW that we hoped could be delayed to a more financially capable time.

The only real way to put these defections behind us is to win in 2013 with the kids who stuck with UAB through to NSD next Wed. No team can sign all the good kids so we must hope we got our share of the ones we need.
Any info or updates re: the City's position on UAB's OCS and master plan efforts? Is there even a relationship between the two entities now that Garrison is out?

Irregardless is not a word
Why do people keep bringing up dorms? Do the football players have to stay in certain ones? When I first decided to go to UAB in 2003, Rast Hall was one of the main factors in my decision. I definitely saw some dorms that were much worse than what UAB had to offer, and that was before the new dorm was built. Also, aren't they building a new dorm now?
(01-30-2013 08:32 AM)blazers9911 Wrote: [ -> ]Why do people keep bringing up dorms?

Because when some of us were in school in the 1980's, the Trustees' and Legislators' crushing of dorm projects was the moral equivalent of this decade's stadium shenanigans. They forbade dorm projects to put us in our place (and because every Southside slum lord howled bitterly about lost revenue).
I can understand, but why bring that up now?

It's like bringing up Jim Crow laws as a reason not to move to Alabama today.

Like a lot of things, it becomes shorthand, in this case for "those Tuscaloosa bastards will do anything to fight the future." Someday, years from now, you'll bring up the stadium and you'll remember this post and know that you are now officially old.
