Steve Welmer was the name of the official who I thought was the best I'd ever seen. You need to go to Google and look him up. He is retiring from officiating due to leg and foot problems. But there are some great articles about him

Turns out he was primarily a Big Ten official, although he officiated all over the country full time. Seems like a really nice person and has the right attitude about officiating. He was a great center at Evansville University (he played at 6'10", 265 pounds). I'd love to have him as either the SBC chief of officials, or at least a consultant would train our officials. If there is an officials Hall of Fame, he would sure get my vote.04-cheers

I couldn't tell you one official from the rest. If they have an officials Hall of Fame, that son of a ***** should be empty. I'm sure there are some officials who do a pretty good job, but I haven't ever seen them.
Read the articles on Welmer. He is the only official I ever knew who he was, and I always knew the game would be well officiated when he was here. He was a big time official and although he officiated all over the country, he spent a lot of time in the Big 10, which would explain why he let the players play. I liked him so much I found his mailing address and wrote him a letter wishing him well on his retirement. We need more like him.

This ref Steve. Is he the ref who often was pulling his pants up as he walked up and down the sideline? Best I recall he seldom called fouls, just let them play. That's how I like to see a ref do his job.
