I started a new preview thread because the other one turned into a love fest regarding attendance and smack talk. Sorry if that offended anyone.
Fellas...I remember losing to EMU last year at UA on a last second shot by their PG Lampley. Their players acted like they had won the lottery, and rightfully so...I believe it secured a West title for them which hadn't been accomplished by EMU since the MAC went to 2 divisions. Anyhow, considering our recent blunders in football and basketball against EMU, I for one would like to return to normalcy and have a good old fashion beat down with our Broncos on top.
Two games really stick out from their non conference schedule in my mind.
1. They beat Purdue 47-44 in Ypsi. Purdue is a bad Big 10 team...but still....
2. They lost 59-57 to Oakland in Ypsi. They allowed Bader to go 5/13 from the 3 point line and score a total of 21 points.
EMU's leading scorer is Derek Thompson. He comes off the bench as their 6th man and has taken as many as 10 3's in a game. His low is 3 attempted. In short, he likes to shoot.
Their next two best players are Glen Bryant and Daylen Harrison (per scoring average). Both are transfers from Arkansas and Wyoming respectively.
Jaylen Ross is a frosh PG that has been handed the reigns. Nothing too great or horrible about his stats or performance. He is somewhat prone to turnovers since he has 46 in the 18 games he has played in. He averages almost 25 mins per game, however, he has been logging over 30 in recent weeks. His turnover ratio per minutes played is similar to Klein's. Ross did just drop 8 assists against Miami the other day.
Their two centers are slightly baffling. Riley was the much heralded 7 footer out of Detroit Country Day that ended up at Syracuse. He transferred when Murphy bolted for the EMU job. Probably just as well as he seems over matched in the MAC at times. Balkema is their backup center.
EMU lost Ray Lee to injury and James Still (Providence transfer) to a legal issue. Both were potential starters for them.
Beyond that, I expect EMU to control the tempo and run their zone like they have for the last two years. They are longer and more athletic than last year.
We win this game if we score in the 60's. It's a nailbiter if we struggle to shoot from the perimeter and end up in the 40's or 50's.
It's likely going to be an "ugly" basketball game in terms of slow play and fewer than normal points scored.
I think our Broncos come out with the hot hand and hit a few 3's in the first half. Shayne and Darius might not get a ton of points in this game, but they will be needed on the boards.
Final:
WMU-68
EMU-54
