Full Version: ? about Austin Harper

The roster lists him as a REDSHIRT Junior, which would mean he is 4 years out of h.s.

I believe he redshirted at WMU, then played one year at Glen Oaks, and then two at EMU (last season + this season).

Will he be graduating this year?

If so, will he not be on the team next season?

Typically, a 5th year for a player who has graduated is really up to the coaching staff. If a player isn't getting major minutes he might not be renewed for a 5th academic year.

I believe coaches try to ensure that the player graduates (for a number of reasons) but after that it is completely up to the coach to renew or not renew.

These players are eligible to transfer as graduate students, without sit-out, and play their 5th calendar year (4th athletic year).

E.g., if Austin graduates this year he could say enroll as a graduate student at a D-II school (e.g., GLIAC) and play his 4th year of collegiate ball.
He will have one year of eligibility left and would be wise to use it elsewhere as a graduate transfer, like you said. With Talley coming in and a healthy Lee to go along with Ross and Sims, I don't see where Harper gets on the court.

Quite frankly, I like the rule.

It would give a student/athlete like Austin incentive to complete a bachelor's degree with full knowledge that he can 'transfer down' for his 5th academic/4th athletic year.

He could do a year of graduate work at say a GLIAC school (e.g., GVSU, Saginaw Valley, etc.) and receive at least a partial scholarship.

I verified through Rivals.com that his last h.s. year was 2008/2009 so this should be his 4th academic year.

Agreed, he is not touching the floor. Kind of sad that a freshman is starting in front of him. Still, never really liked his game. I can see how he managed to put up great number at the JUCO level. He is quick and athletic with a pretty nice set of skills. Unfortunately at the D-1 level every point guard is just as talented. To me he seemed lost and without confidence. When it comes to the PG spot I look for confidence, leadership, and a smart player who on top of that is gifted athletically and skilled.
He supposedly spent a year at WMU but I can't find it in the media guide, etc. It is almost as if it didn't exist... Kind of strange.
He's finally playing the role he was meant for.

He did. Check out wmu's website and roster from 2009-10. I had high hopes for him since we needed a PG that could relieve Kool of those duties.

ChipDip has a legendary story about an encounter with his dad at Breakfast with the Broncos, which is a preseason meet and greet for our team.

Apparently his dad told ChipDip that Austin was the best PG on our roster. And our roster included Mikey Douglas, who now holds our all time assist record...David Kool who handled PG duties when necessary...and Demetrius Ward who ran the point with Douglas in 2010-11 and was all MAC West.

Point being, it's somewhat naive, cocky and ego driven when you claim your son is the best PG when he hasn't even played a minute of college ball.

His class included Brown, Whittington, Hutcheson and Pokely...all who are playing key roles for us this year.

Please don't take this as I'm passing judgement on him or his family. Just passing along a story told by ChipDip. Although, my reaction wound be accurate if proven to be true.
Wow seriously? Parents just need to keep their mouths shut. What good does it do your kid if you run around making claims like that? Especially with the talent on the team that you mentioned. Just dumb.

But he's not even the 2nd most talented PG on OUR roster (and we don't exactly have a Mike Douglas yet, although Ross might get there someday)...I'd rather play our walk-on, Chandler, and I'm not including Sims, who's our de facto backup PG. Harper just looks lost out there. He doesn't seem like a bad kid, so I hope he goes elsewhere next year so he can play a little bit before his eligibility runs out.
Where is Hoopster? (when we need him)

Assuming Harper won't be back next season that frees up another scholarship.

I only counted 8 returning scholarship players (Ross, Talley, Sims. Lee, Harrison, Ward, Bryant, and Riley).
You forgot Strickland, who was awarded a scholarship before the season. So 9.

Strickland case is interesting.

I believe, he like Harper, will be graduating as a 4 academic year player.

Will Murph bring him back next year for his 5th academic year? Or does he collect his degree and decide to complete his career?

Or does he do what we suggest may happen with Harper, i.e., graduate and player at a lower level as a 5th year graduate student.

Man, we need to get some wide-bodies.

As it stands, Strick would probably get plenty of minutes next year, seeing as we have very few front court players coming back. He'd be much more likely to stay than Harper.

I don't know if any of you know this story...but here it goes...

Harper ended up at WMU after Hawkins watched him play AAU ball in Louisville. He dropped 18 points on John Wall in that game. Harper had a few schools sniffing around (Detroit, WMU, Milwaukee?) and Hawkins felt like if WMU didn't offer now, he would end up somewhere bigger after that performance. Apparently Harper wanted to be at WMU the whole time and jumped at the offer.

Keep in mind, I wasn't there nor do I have a source. This info came from mlive and previous threads on the Stampede.

I feel for the kid.

Apparently he has a good love for the game but never found a home.

It wasn't WMU.

Apparently Murph was desperate for a PG (no one knew that Lamp would handle the position well - most assumed he was a short SG) and on to EMU as a JUCO transfer.

Lamps takes over and now Harper gets stuck behind Ross and Talley.

I hope he gets a good college degree out of his travails and maybe a shot at another year as a 5th year eligible. Maybe start at the GLIAC level.
18 on John Wall? I don't think he could drop 18 on a brick wall right now, but I believe you. He's not a bad basketball player...I just don't think he's mid major material.

Can't get over that story about his dad though. I'd be so furious at my dad if he did some ish like that.

The comments on mlive always crack me up in hindsight. The haters blow up Hawkins because he didn't renew his scholarship...yet 3 years later, nobody is missing him and he's buried on EMU's bench.

You'll find the story about his dad and ChipDip in the thread I linked. I mentioned he thought he was better than Kool at PG...my memory was off. Still pretty close considering we had Mikey Douglas.
On the topics of point guards (ours) is Chandler on scholarship? Just curious.

Chandler came on board as a walk-on. i'm not sure if he was offered one for this season. (did we have any extras for this season?)

Strickland got the extra scholarship. He started a bunch of games last season so he was entitled to it.

Chandler is a nice walk-on but won't get a schollie for next season.
