I wish I had written down when I told a couple friends before the 2011 Draft that Kaepernick was the best QB in the Draft and that it wasn't even close. The Titans would have been clueless as to how to use him, so probably for the best.

When Kaepernick,s parents adopted him 20 years ago I knew he would be an NFL quarterback. I should have written it down back then.
How'd the Titans treat Memphis?

Only thing I can remember is that they were supposed to play in Memphis for 2 years while the stadium was built but they only stayed one, then moved to Vanderbilt stadium?
Because no one came.

Nor did the NFL forget how Memphis treated them. Memphis won't ever have an NFL team. It would probably suit you best to cheer for the closest thing you had.

True.

But it's tough to take as a native Memphian --

-- 1970's - one of four finalists for expansion teams - Tampa, Seattle, Phoenix, Memphis
-- Colts relocation - finalists included Phoenix, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Memphis
-- 1990's - final five of St. Louis, Baltimore, Charlotte, Memphis, Jacksonville

It's hard not to realize that every other city on the above lists currently has an NFL team. Nashville snuck up out of nowhere.

Rob

It shouldn't be that hard to take. This city can't support an NFL team.

F'em. How many times do you have to let someone **** all over you before you walk away. We were in the running for a team several times. Most recently in the last expansion in 1995 when we had a very strong ownership group with Fred Smith and Pitt Hyde leading the charge. They gave the franchise to Jacksonville instead and you see how well that has worked out for them. It's probably got the least fan support of any team in the NFL.

Bud Adams was/is a total DICK. Couldn't understand why we weren't falling all ourselves to make facility upgrades for him to be where for two years. Referred to us in one press conference as "Memphites". And it's not just Memphis. Ask the folks in Houston how well they like Adams. They are liable to spit in your face. They were actually glad to see him go.

Like I said to start with. F'em.

NFL would come to Memphis tomorrow if the population grew to 5,000,000 in 30 years, the per capita income were in the top 10 percent of America, and there was a money making modern stadium already here.

You forgot... The Dallas Texans considered Memphis before going to KC and becoming the Chiefs.

And the St. Louis Cardinals considered Memphis before going to Phoenix.

Psst... Psst... Psst...

The lead was Billy Dunavant. The guy who sued the NFL with the USFL. Fred Smith (I don't recall Pitt Hyde being part of the group - of course I could be wrong.) was the lead, and left. When he came back, he was a silent minority part of the deal. If Fred Smith was still lead dog, the team wouldn't have been called "Houndogs" and we'd probably have gotten the team.

Jacksonville had a new stadium (built on grounds of the old stadium). We didn't. That was the difference.

And I'm sorry to say... If we got the Houndogs, and the Oilers became the Jaguars, our support of the Houndogs would probably be similar to the support of the Jags, given we are similar markets.

Would Nashvillians come to Memphis for NFL games in force?

Adams is. But don't take it personally. He's a businessman. And when he tried to screw us, we screwed him back. We don't do business with someone who sees us as a stepping stone.

Just remember the Tennessee Oilers played 8 games in Vanderbilt stadium, with 40,000 seats... And only sold out 4 of the games.

Legend has it that are truly closest brush with having an NFL team was that George Halas invited Clarence Saunders to join the NFL with his semi-pro team, the Memphis Tigers and Saunders turned Halas down. 03-banghead

Don't know how true that story is, but if it is, that should be more proof of Saunders' business shortcomings than him losing the Pink Palace.

Fact is – unable to use the Piggly Wiggly name; he started another chain with the snappy moniker of Clarence Saunders Sole Owner Of My Name Stores, recovered his fortune, and lost it again in the Great Depression. He even started a football team, kicking off another story.

Notable bookies say after Saunders’ Tigers beat the Green Bay Packers in 1929, a guy from the Decatur Staleys asked the team to join a league his buddies were starting. Saunders said no because he didn’t like to travel. The league was the National Football League, the guy was George Halas and the Staleys became the Chicago Bears.

Oh well.
