Jan. 4, 2013

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - While the University of Louisville men's basketball team has performed well on the court, the Cardinals have excelled in the classroom as well.

The Cardinals produced a collective 3.41 grade point average for the 2012 UofL fall semester, with 15 of the 17 student-athletes on its roster achieved a 3.0 or better grade point average. Both are record numbers for the men's basketball team, which has hovered around a collective 3.0 GPA for nine straight semesters. The team produced a combined 3.16 GPA for the 2011 fall semester and had a 3.13 GPA for the 2012 spring semester. A dozen Cardinals have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better.

The academic achievement is not new to the Cardinals. UofL's men's basketball team earned the 2010-11 and 2011-12 BIG EAST Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards, which recognizes the highest collective grade-point averages in each of the conference's 24 sports.

The Cardinals (13-1, 1-0 BIG EAST Conference), ranked No. 4 nationally in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls, have won eight straight games. Louisville plays its first BIG EAST Conference road game of the season as the Cardinals face Seton Hall in the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Wednesday.
