Per Andy Katz, UMass and Tulsa are high on the expansion list once SDSU officially withdraws.

UMass fans: would you welcome this move?

Interesting.

Could the nMAC (13 teams) return to oMAC (12 teams) (newMAC = Old MAC - Temple - UMass + 6M from Temple + N millions from UMass)?

I think I want to be the MAC's CFO. 03-lmfao
Because Temple left, the UMass buyout is very small. They signed on with the understanding they were a complement to Temple and only had a large buyout if they left before Temple.
Either move makes sense but together?

My word the nBe has a though time finding an identity that that guy from the Memento Movie... They know who they were a long time ago but have no clue what they did 5 minutes ago!

Take UMass and another NE'ish school To build a large state identity in the NE and hope to get better... Marshall / Delaware / ODU / Army ......

Take Tulsa and Southern Miss to complete the CUSA transition and bring in long standing quality programs..

Either one is ok but they keep making moves together that make no sense!

It's small (500K) if they wait for a period (don't know if it's one year or two), if they want to leave now they will have to negotiate their way out like Temple did and that raised Temple's buyout from 2.5 to 5 million.

Saying it will costs UMass a million is not out of the question unless the Big East will wait until 2015 (which honestly they could)..

Then their is their A10 Buyout... Wait a year or pay 500K
If SD St does not play football in the BE in 2013 then the BE DESPERATELY needs a 12th team for the 2013 season...so they can have divisions to ease travel and a championship game to sell to the TV networks.

It would not surprise me if UMASS was offered but only if they joined this next year. In that case they would owe the MAC a few mil.

Basketball would then follow eventually like Temple.

Even though I supported the idea of UMass to the MAC (because it was a bookend to go with Temple), if UMass wants to be in the nBE and the nBE wants them for all sports, then I guess show us the money and let them go in 2013 so the nBE can get to 12 teams.

We have had dozens and dozens of posts saying "Take the MAC back to its core 12 schools and be happy with the status quo" (and the MAC CFO will be happy to cash checks from Temple and UMass for leaving.
One thing that comes to mind:

The nBE needs quality BASKETBALL schools like Temple, UMass, etc.

Without the 'Catholic 7' nBE hoops is...
If this happens, I'm assuming this would make the MAC a stronger football conference, right?

Still better than the MAC and if the C-7 take some A-10 schools then the BE will be better than the A-10 after being pillaged.

Its a good move for UMASS's image (not football program) if they can come up with the cash.

Yes. Preseason SOS would go up if UMASS was not on our schedules.
I like UMass, with that being said, I hope its true. The MAC would be stronger without an FBS newbie.
I'd rather see UMass join the MAC in all sports than join a patchwork Big East.

Interesting...why?

Pro's
More FB/BB TV money than the MAC.
More bowl access than the MAC.
Likely more BCS access money than the MAC.
UMASS would be in a basketball league with UCONN, Temple and Cincinnati. (not sure about how good the other schools are)
Recruiting exposure more to the East coast.
Buffalo on deck if UCONN leaves.

Con's
Have to pay the MAC a few mil to leave.
Have to pay the BE a few mil to join.
UCONN and Cincinnati likely gone by 2016

IF UMass really wants to be in the MAC, then I'd be glad to have them for all sports.

We'd need school #14 but I'd worry about that later (my choice would be SUNY-Stony Brook which I feel is a real up and coming athletic program and already a first rate academic school).

Stony Brook has:

1). Made the college World Series, as did Kent State (nothing wrong with the MAC being a northern baseball power conference).

2). Had a very successful FCS season during which they beat Army badly and damn near beat Syracuse. FWIW, their Sagarin is #128, better than 1/2 of the MAC.

3). Their hoops Sagarin is #77 and would place them #2 in the MAC behind Akron and ahead of Ohio. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/sa...kc1213.htm
Aside from UConn, they'll be on an island. The Big East is gradually becoming centered around the Mississippi Valley.

Cincinnati, Louisville, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, South Florida, UCF (Tulsa?). That's the core of the conference now. Navy and ECU are football-only members, which we are well aware don't really identify with the full-time members. UMass is closer to 8 MAC schools than to ECU, who is being thrown out there as being "regional" for UMass.

Beyond all that, quite a few Big East teams are looking to leave for the MWC. Where does that leave UMass if they join and them half the strength of the conference abandons them?

Just my own humble opinion, just being a fan of the school and not taking into account the money and all that. The Big East is in shambles and will likely continue along that path, so I'd rather have the school stay far away and stay in a stable MAC.

The drawback is that once UConn and Cincinnati move on, UMass would be on a very distant island from the rest of the remnant conference (other than Temple). The next closest school would be ECU, and the conference then stretches to Texas (2x) and Florida (2x). That's a helluva travel schedule for all-sports.
I would like taking UMass for all sports, them going to the MAC would be a good long-term move for us. That being said, I won't cry if they leave for the BE, given the exit fee, reduced football travel, and our SOS improvement at the moment.
well this is awful news from my perspective. congrats to umass if true though.
the mac will be content to stay at 12 and our most realistic avenue is shut.
