Sorry to hear it. Worked with the dude briefly. His was the name people went gunning for at Riverside for years and years.

I'm sure he's been to a game or two

Fair enough.
Wonder why they called him Hooker?
My late uncle's brother, Lloyd Mathis, used to race against him at Riverside back in the 50's and beat him a few times. Hooker was a tough competitor and a true legend as a stock car driver.

Nickname he picked up while serving in military. He was a boxer with a mean left hook.

One cannot believe the people who have dropped by and spent time in his little shop out back of his house. When you have a future mayor of shelby county in your shop working on your car and helping at the track and the King of Rock and Roll drops by your place to sit and ask questions. It says something about how big the man really was.
A genuine local legend

Maybe he hit his tee shots right to left.
RIP...

But to be honest, from this thread title, I thought there was another sting on Lamar Ave.

My father in law was in Lloyd/Hooker's generation and was at Riverside every Sat. night for decades. He talked about your uncle's brother a lot. He was obviously a good driver in his day.

Nope. He drove for my company briefly.
As a kid I got to see Hooker win many/most races at Riverside. I lived just down the street from Sammy Swindell Sr. Got to watch both his sons become world class drivers. Anyway here is a link with some cool pics of Hooker Hood and several other Mid-South drivers from the 50's, 60's and 70's who were in the same class of driver as Hooker. When these guys showed up at Riverside the place was packed and the races were incredible. You not only had to have a fast well set up car but you had to have balls the size of coconuts. Hooker was one of the best. Just click on the drivers highlighted names for the pics. http://www.misschicken.com/
