I thought he went to Tennessee?

Butch Jones not Davis
Yep. It apparently is a done deal for FIU to land Butch Davis. Rumors had been swirling for a while now.
Not sure that he does any better at FIU than Cristobal did.

I agree, but I also think Cristobal did a solid job.

I do too. FIU's Athletic Director is all about hiring names. A bigger name came up and so he dumped Cristobal like a bad habit. Isiah Thomas was another celebrity hire (that one ended very poorly).
So rumor has it that FIU fired Cristobal for some unknown infraction, yet they then hire Davis. Irony.
Great coach. Great hire.
This is an interesting hire. Wish FIU the best, but it would of not been my first choice.

Apparently, PG wanted Mario to fire an assistant and Mario wouldnt so he got canned instead.

ill find the article again
This is a great Christmas present for all of us FIU fans for several reasons. One of my favorite one has already started in the local media.

CBS 4 News on Butch Davis

Quote:If Davis is indeed the next coach at FIU, he will be in prime territory to once again recruit South Florida hard like he did when he was at the University of Miami. Davis is a great talent evaluator and brings in top prospects wherever he’s been a coach.

A potential Davis hiring will also ignite a recruiting rivalry with the University of Miami as both schools fight for the top prospects in the area.

I got to say, that Pete came from UM, but he LOVES sticking it to those guys. I really believe that he has a hatred for them that's about as strong as my hate for them. One of the reasons I can so easily forgive the crap he pulled with IT and Coach Cristobal. Go F I U!

Great coach
Why would Davis do better than Cristobal in recruiting in Miami?
He has a great HS pipeline with the local coaches, because a lot of them went to UM when he was there. He has a reputation for putting guys in the NFL and he plays an exciting brand of football on both sides of the ball. Coach Davis is a much better HC than MC is at this point, and again, the only good explanation as to why MC was let go. Upgrade.

Are you serious? You don't know how great a recruiter Davis is? The best talent level ever assembled at UM was when Butch came to coach the Canes. He did so, while having to deal with NCAA sanctions levied against Miami the first 2-3 years due to infractions committed during the tenure of Dennis Erickson. He brought the players that, when he left to coach the Cleveland Browns, Larry Coker won a national championship and 24 games in a row before losing the national championship in 2 overtimes to Ohio State the second year after Butch Davis left.

So yes, Butch Davis can recruit South Florida very well.
Davis is a good coach and will do well with FIU. Too bad he isn't a man of good moral character.

Even with Nevin Shapiro in federal prison?
He did it before since he was in Miami from 1995 - 2000.

Quote:In August 2010 Shapiro told the Miami Herald that he was writing a book The Real U: 2001 to 2010. Inside the Eye of the Hurricane in which he promised to tell how Miami had violated NCAA rules affecting more than 100 players. "Once the players turned pro, they turned their back on me. It made me feel like a used friend," he said.[3]

Shapiro was reported to have spent $2 million from 2002 to 2010 boosting Miami sports -- primarily football -- but also including contact with the basketball team under Frank Haith.

In 2002 he paid $1.5 million for 30 percent in [7] a sports management company called Axcess Sports, which had been started by Michael Huyghue. The agency signed several Hurricanes including Vince Wilfork.[3]

On August 16, 2011 in a jailhouse interview with Yahoo Sports writer Charles Robinson (conducted over 100 hours), Shapiro made good on the promise for the revelations exposing a lack of NCAA-mandated institutional oversight at the university which apparently allowed his illegal and unethical behaviors to continue unimpeded for years. Thus far 72 athletes are alleged by Shapiro to have received "impermissible" benefits from him between 2002 and 2010. The players include Vince Wilfork, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester, Willis McGahee and Sean Taylor. Sports publications have speculated that if the claims are true, the NCAA could impose the death penalty on the Miami football program. [8]

Photos in the Yahoo article showed him with Kellen Winslow Jr. in the VIP section of the Opium Garden Nightclub in 2005; Shapiro with Haith and University of Miami President Donna Shalala in 2008 as he donated $50,000 to the basketball program as well as $3 million in other donations to undisclosed recipients; and with Vince Wilfork in 2002.[1]
