What a great article! I can verify everything to be true...I was there. Imagine what would have happened if Ralph Sampson had chosen ETSU? The idea was go to Virginia...they are going to the NCAA with or without you. Come to ETSU...you will be like Larry Bird and what he did for Indiana State. Your value will be higher because you are the reason. ETSU could have gotten in a little trouble for working out the "recruit" with that pickup game. Can you imagine...ETSU on probation for working out 7'4" Ralph Sampson? It is a silly thought. I think Sonny's pitch made sense even though it was a long shot. Perhaps if the dome had the same basketball configuration that it has now...and a guarantee of sell outs every game...Ralph would have been a Buc. Thank you point guard BJ Johnson for the thrill of dreaming and the potential for making ETSU a household name. I often wonder what Sonny could have accomplished if he didn't run off to Auburn. He had it going on as Buc attendance zoomed in 1978 with that virtual sell out against Western Kentucky. That was with the court being in the center of the dome and spectators sitting on both sides in the football seats. Bring your binoculars!
