Seems pretty out of left field...never heard of the guy.

He was a hero to NIU folks when he played there.

Was a possession receiver (that means he wasn't fast) but considered a very, very intelligent player.

He was born to be a coach.
Young guy. Only 32.
I'm surprised, but in a bad way.

This is a terrible hire, simply because he has never been a coordinator at any level.

I'm not saying that it won't work out; he may indeed be a great coach. If it does work out, though, it will be because they were lucky, not because their selection process was appropriate.

I agree a high risk pick.

Totally agree. I'm all for hiring young guys (Kingsbury at Texas Tech is a good example), but only if they've at least been an OC or DC for a couple years or so. Obviously, Doeren thought enough of him to offer the OC job at NIU, but who knows how he would've handled that? Quite a risk for Western.
Hustle Belt notes on twitter that the oldest coach in the MAC West is now Ron English at 44. 03-lol

He was very good as a WR at NIU. He was a WR coach and i think recruiting coordinator at NIU after a brief stint in the NFL. Then he went to Rutgers for a similar position I think. Accepted OC job at NIU last year but was only in the job 1 day before accepting an NFL coaching job in Tampa Bay. That didn't go over well with some NIU fans. Definitely an energetic, charismatic guy and seems to be a leader. Guess we'll all find out.
Change is not always positive. Wow they fired Cubit (I can understand that) and replaced him with this? Must be on a tight budget over at WMU.
It doesn't seem like budget is the reason.

Western Michigan: P.J. Fleck's agreement is reportedly 5 years at $392,500...in line with what Bill Cubit made. That salary (according to USA Today's database) is higher than the head coach at several other MAC programs makes (Bowling Green, Buffalo, Ball State, Toledo, Akron, Central Michigan & Eastern Michigan all make less). [/align]
I honestly though Craig Bohl would be WMU's coach. WMU's coaching search is instructive in case EMU makes a coaching change. Anything less than $400,000 no longer gets you a top experienced Div I assistant coach like Chuck Martin or other top flight BCS schools.

For those interested, USA Today (I saw it in the print copy) has top assistant coach salaries and ave. assistant coach salaries.

400K in the SEC will get a good position coach.

I don't think 400k gets a position coach in the SEC to bolt for a HC job in the MAC.

Money talks and most of those position coaches are making 350K or so. They pay increase has to be substantial for them to leave the SEC. IMO it would have to be a 150k+ increase or higher.

the only + I can say is that the MAC schools will be getting more monies this year from the BCS bowl game and a lot more monies when the playoffs kick in.

In short:

Revenues UP (from BCS + Playoff payoffs)

Expenses UP (coaches' salaries).

However Revenues increases > Expense increases
