Full Version: I'm confused! Thought football was where the money was?

All I've been hearing is that football is driving the re-alignment and that is what determines value of TV contract.

If that IS true: Why the hugh uproar about the 7 Catholic basketball only schools leaving?

Heard that it would de-value tv contract 20-30% (which Jay Bilas disagrees with)-why such a drop for schools that don't play football?

All that said, still less schools to divvy money up with.

Big Issues: Exit fee money and NCAA BB tourney money units (huge amount for Big East). Who gets those?
because they are still huge programs in huge markets. Plus the issue of NCAA credits, and BEast naming rights, and tourney contract, and auto-bid requirements, etc...

There's a whole lot of reasons this causes a stir. A whole lot of questions and answers to come.

Seems to me the basketball only schools are confused as well.

raises, yes. answers, no. good article though, read it earlier.
With no Catholic schools, the chances of league exposure in major northeast markets goes down and the chances of playing in Madison Square Garden for BE Tournament in the biggest TV market will leave the building like Elvis did.
I been waiting for a while for the BB programs to separate from the FB conferences.

Despite the angry and bitter responses I got for suggesting that, it appears this could be the first move twards that. THe non FB schools would have to form a BB only leauge and get a decent TV contract before any FB schools would make a move to separate.

Looks like it may be starting. This had to happen first.
FWIW. When I worked at the UofM, profits from the basketball program almost covered the losses from the football program. Football is so expensive to run compared to basketball.
