The amount of empty seats at the home games so far should be of a concern. The ever present group that leaves early is one thing but the empty seats are not a good thing to see on TV. Conservatively there were between 15% and 20% of the seats in the lower level empty the entire game against Austin Peay. Even more in the upper level. If you have tickets you are not going to use then why not get somebody to attend in your place or offer them to some one who has season tickets in the upper level. The empty seats send a negative message. If you are not going to the game and know this a few days before the game then post on the Tiger Bay section to arrange giving the seat to season ticket holders in the upper sections who would love to sit closer to the action. They in turn can give their tickets to some one who will come in their place. When they announce we have 16,000 in attendance and you know there is barely 12,000 it sounds ridiculous. Just saying.

Thanks man. Your post was incredibly useful and not full of exaggeration.

I say sticky this brilliant insight.

Put all unsold tickets on sale for $5 24 hours before the game. Fill the arena.

Isn't the issue, in fact, that announced attendance are tickets that have been sold? So while there may be 4000 empty seats, there may only be 1000 available tickets. Most empty seats are season ticket holders not attending or people who are scalping them.
15-20 % empty? Someone needs a math lesson

In what way?

Forum holds 18,300 for basketball. 20%= 3,660 15%=2,745. Split the difference and put that at 3200.

That would be "assess in seats" at 15,100.

HELL NO.

I don't think ANY game has broken 15K yet. Heck, the "announced" attendance (which is tickets sold I think) is only in the 15K range.

The upper bowl (which holds about 6K) is only about 40% filled--which already means 2400 seats are empty.

The club holds about 2-3K and has big portions empty and the lower bowl (7K) even if 80% full means another 1400 seats are empty.

Safe to say at least 4k seats are empty at the games, whihch is more than the 15-20% estimate given earlier.

I sat with a guy from UCF, a guy from Ill and they we amazed that we had that many people to see a game against AP.

It is amazing how many of our fans think that all of our negatives are unique and our positives are common.

You set a standard and you expect to live up to it.

The Vols "only" had about 80,000 people (or about four Memphis football crowds) for their homecoming this year.

I say "only" because they generally get 100k at the games. 80,000 is unthinkable to a Memphis fan, yet is disappoiting to a Vols fan.

Perspective.

This is a great point. Our "bad games" that result in bad attendance are magnified by the fact that we have such a huge arena. 12000+ is very impressive for the games we have played thus far. You will see the potential we had if the Big East had stayed in tact come Saturday. It's incredibly disappointing the way things have gone, because it looks like me may be stuck with bad competition and the Louisville type crowds will be rare instead of commonplace.

Just to clarify, I said conservatively 15 to 20% in the lower level, and even more in the upper level. Also I only mentioned the Austin Peay game which had weak attendance. But as usual people will read into any post what they want. I also said that when they announce 16,000 in attendance and you know there is barely 12,000 that leaves approximately 6300 empty seats. But again read into it what you will. The point of the post was to discuss getting more people in the seats as opposed to the accuracy of my estimation.

Not a knock on your post. I agree. I bet the Ohio (biggest game of the year) may have had 13K there.

Just wasn't sure if Bluto thought the 15-20% was an under or over estimation.

Disappointed at the 3-4k who used to show up and don't now.

First sign of a coach getting on the hot seat is when attendance dips.

If this Big East thing falls apart, Memphis can't fall back into the lean years of 9-11K a game--esp in an 18K arena.

There are only a handfull of programs in the NCAA that have the fan support that Memphis has in basketball. Truth is football's support is good when you consider the product thats been on the field the last few yrs. We had 23k opening game for football. Thats really good considering. If things turn around for football 35k wont be a problem and thats a great number for a team outside the BCS.
