The Reds are unveiling an alternate jersey starting in 2013. The Red jersey will have ‘Los Rojos’ emblazoned on the front, in white scripted letters. Los Rojos is Spanish for “Reds.”

The Reds will wear the jersey at selected games.

Pitcher Johnny Cueto sported a Los Rojos jersey this weekend at Redsfest, where the jerseys also were available for fans to purchase.

“We’ll use it throughout the season at home games, with exact dates not determined,” said Phil Castellini, Reds chief operating officer. “We might also do it on the road, for example, if we’re in Milwaukee at the same time they’re doing their Hispanic Heritage night.”

Karen Forgus, Reds senior vice president of business operations, said the team received feedback from fans before choosing the new jersey.

“We found there’s an appetite with our fans that they love things with Los Rojos on it, because it’s fun,” Forgus said. “We’re not changing our main uniform. This is an alternate.”

Um...maybe in Texas...but in Ohio?! Never thought I'd see the day.
I think it's more in homage to the Hispanic players than local Hispanic fans. I'm okay with it as long as they only wear them for select games.

Drive thru lower Price Hill; Cincinnati has a growing hispanic population.
How about?

What’s up? Price of pitching
12/10/12 at 1:40pm by jfay

With the Ryan Ludwick deal official, Walt Jocketty can shift his full attention to improving the leadoff.

That’s a sound strategy for 2013.

But to insure the future competitiveness of the franchise, the Reds have to look at signing Mat Latos and Homer Bailey to long-term contracts and adding years to Johnny Cueto’s deal.

Why?

The cost of pitching just keeps on climbing. The Dodgers have reportedly offered Zack Greinke $147 million over six years. Greinke is a legitimate ace, the top free agent pitcher out there.

But over the last two years, Cueto and Latos both had better ERAs and WHIPs than Greinke. Bailey wasn’t all that far behind. Look at the numbers:

Greinke: 31-11, 3.63 ERA, 62 starts, 1.198 WHIP
Cueto: 28-14, 2.58 ERA, 57 starts, 1.137 WHP
Latos: 23-18, 3.48 ERA, 64 starts, 1.172 WHIP
Bailey: 22-17, 3.97 ERA, 55 starts, 1.256 WHIP

Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time. Latos is arb-eligible for the first. Jocketty has already spoken to Bailey’s agent about a deal. He plans to speak to Latos’ agent.

Cueto signed a four-year, $27 million deal in January of 2011. It pays him $7.4 million this year, $10 million in 2014 and there’s a $10 million club option for ’15. There’s obviously no rush to get a new deal done, but the way prices are rising, it might not be a bad idea to act early.

Ryan Ludwick deal official with Reds
12/10/12 at 1:57pm by nhurm

The Ryan Ludwick deal is official. There will be a press conference at 2:30 p.m. today. The Reds sent out the following release this afternoon:

Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the signing of free agent OF Ryan Ludwick to a 2-year contract through the 2014 season with a mutual option for 2015 ($15 million).

Ludwick, 34, in 125 appearances last season for the Reds hit .275 with 26 home runs and 80 RBI while making a team-high 107 starts in left field.

“Ryan was very important to our success last year, and we’re looking to keep that momentum going into next season,” Jocketty said. “He and his agents made it clear he enjoyed his time here last season and that he wanted to continue to play in Cincinnati. We know he had other offers, and we’re glad we were able to reach an agreement to bring Ryan back for at least 2 more years.”

In 2012, Ludwick was a finalist for the Players Choice Comeback Player of the Year Award and tied the club record for fewest errors in a season by a left fielder (1). As the Reds battled for the National League Central Division title, in his last 80 games of the season he hit .313 with 18 HR and 53 RBI, including .421 in his last 57 at bats with runners in scoring position.

While Joey Votto missed 48 games with an injury in August and September, Ludwick led the Reds in hitting (.340), home runs (12, tied with Jay Bruce) and RBI (36).

Ludwick takes happiness over money
12/10/12 at 3:40pm by jfay

Ryan Ludwick went with heart as much as his wallet when he re-upped with the Reds for two more years.

“He had several clubs chasing after him,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. “Two or three in particular would have good places for him to play. At least one had more money on the table. That’s a credit to Ryan.”

“Money gets brought into the game of baseball a lot,” Ludwick said. “But happiness means a lot to me. I’m extremely, extremely happy here.”

Players coming years in which they did not produce like Ludwick have gotten deals that were longer and for more money per year than he got.

“I had some offers,” Ludwick said. “I told Walt that I’d come back here if the deal was fair. I wasn’t looking for the biggest dollar. Walt stood true to what he said. I stood true to what I said. Ultimately, if you take all the teams in Major League Baseball and take the one team where I wanted to be, this was it.”

Ludwick’s two-year contract is worth $15 million total. It includes a mutual option for 2015. That was a way of spreading the money out over more time for Reds. Ludwick turned down a $5 million option with the Reds, but he made it clear that he wanted to come back.

“I let Walt know that at the end of the year,” Ludwick said. “I’m really, really happy and excited to be back.”

Ludwick has seen the other side. He was traded to San Diego in 2010 and Pittsburgh in ’11 at the deadline. He struggled both places.

“Nothing against those organizations or those cities,” he said. “But, for me, it didn’t work. I wasn’t happy. It was tough on me mentally at times. Here, it was completely different feel from Day 1.”
