Watched their dismantling of the #2 FCS team tonight and I was very impressed. Fritz is supposed to be one of the coaches we are looking at and I'm impressed. Anything we should know, good or bad?
I wish we would have interviewed Fritz last year.
I've followed him for a while (tv and internet) because I thought he should be our next coach at UTEP. Would love to have him since he has created winning programs wherever he's been.
That's who I wanted as well. Haven't seen anything concrete yet on Kugler but I really hope we land Fritz.
I wanted Fritz too. Sam Houston Alum here. Great game last night.
There is a lot of speculation that Willie would not do well at the D-1 level. That is not my opinion but just from what I've heard.

I loved the fact that Sumlin's had Johnny Manziel kick an extra point (missed). Then Sam Houston rolled off 28 unanswered points kicking onside kicks. Don't think Willie liked that move.
I think Fritz is a great coach, but if you are thinking about Sam Houston going FBS, you are wrong. They only averaged 8700 this season.

I think they're just talking about the coaching... most people know Sam Houston as a program is FCS caliber.

Fortunately, he is already doing just fine at the D-1 level
The Risk with the FCS coaches is you don't know how good they will be at recruiting. For sure, they can't recruit tactically like they did in FCS. And some use the FCS advantages more than others. I don't know anything about SHSU, but they are geographically located in a perfect place to take every player from Rice, UH, Tex AM and maybe even UT who couldn't make grades or wanted to transfer for other reasons.
Sam Houston St. plays Eastern Washington for Division 1AA Championship. EWU's QB is a familiar name-Kyle Padron formerly of SMU. Started season off slow but over last 7 or so games he's completing about 70% of his passes-tonite he threw 6 TD passes.

But representing a FBS program still carries more weight than FCS, right? I would assume recruits would still work to impress the Rice assistant coaches before settling on the Sam Houston ones. The higher competition level just makes recruiting more competitive amongst good talent. You might lose every '3 star' to Texas Tech and Baylor, but you still need to make your presence known to them to be an option.

Bobby Bowden way back in the day, Jim Tressel not that long ago, and both Jim Harbaugh and Brian Kelly today--all of them got their start at small colleges. I doubt that there's any serious advanced stat metrics to measure coaches or coaching decisions, but if I'm doing a thorough search--some of those competent candidates are at FCS/D2 schools, and they can't all be taking 'FCS advantages'. Some of them are undoubtedly coaching up with good X's and O's.

No, SHSU plays EWU for the right to go to the IAA Championship game. They will either play NDSU or GA Southern. If they beat EWU. It could end up being a rematch from last year. I don't think there has been a rematch of the title game since 1992, when Youngstown State and Marshall played each other in 1991 and again in 1992.
LOL, this thread was addressed to UH fans but I'm the first to respond. Edit: aside from Shocker Bob

Ahem.
Sorry for the cough.

(LOL, sorry, I just now saw you).
Apparently UTEP did interview Fritz this year? That's what our Rivals editor says he's recently heard.
