Dan you would be a good guy to have drinks with, the glass is always half full. UC is pretty good at the 3 year coaching deal.
I am not worried about it...............but realignment is the 800 lb Gorilla in the room.
Dan please for love of all things holy make a call into 700 wlw as soon as you possibly can and give UC a little of the respect that they deserve.
Nice article
Dan, Coaches my come and go around here quicker than you can shake a stick at, but YOU are not allowed to leave.
As much as I would like to have a coach spend the rest of their career here I don't think that is in the cards. UC will be what they are - a great place to win football games and continue on the path to more money and greater facilities for young, hot coaches. That is not a bad thing. We can renovate Nippert to 45,000 seats and add some money generating boxes but we will never be like the top tier programs that will take our coaches away - read "destination jobs". Tha tis OK. UC is in the middle of a huge recruiting area so we will always be competitive as long as we have good coaching. So every 3-5 years we will be in this position and that is OK! that is what the program is.

Support the b-ball program. That is the sport that UC can win a National Championship in. Yes the football team can catch lightning in a bottle now and then but that keeps getting harder and harder as the Big 4 conferences consolidate their poswer and money grab over college football. Yes I did not mention the ACC as that is becoming more and more like the old Big East. Great b-ball and some good football with the Big 4 conf. poachign the football programs.

I know football brings in the money but be careful where you spend your available money.
I've been chewing on this since the middle of yesterday, and it occurs to me we need to rethink our structure and philosophy. If you accept as a given the following:

1. UC will attract high-quality coaches because of the combination of factors including geography, quality of base recruiting area, relative quality of conference vs alternatives, etc.

2. That high-quality coaches will invariably only stay long enough to get their next job and take some or all of their staff with them.

If you accept these, then maybe we need to restructure the football department in such a way that it doesn't matter as much who that coach is. I'm not sure how the heck you do that, but somehow tie the assistants, etc. less to the coach. Coach is able to bring in a few of their own people, but everyone else is hand-picked by the AD, and is tied to the AD not the coach through a clever and draconian contract and compensation plan.

Just an idea. Perhaps then we'd care less when a Butch Jones or a Brian Kelly comes and goes.
I may be in the minority, but I'm keeping an eye on Mike Mickens coaching career. Hopefully he makes a step up from Indiana St DB Coach after next season.

It would be nice to eventually get a former player back as a head coach.

I think they need to bring back several players. There are some I know that live in the area who UC just doesnt reach out to and try to get them invovled with the program.

Wonder if Walter Stewart will now be interning in Tennessee.
Something we have to keep in mind its always darkest before the dawn. With all the bad stuff that has happened lately (no acc bid, our head coach leaving) this may be a turning point in our program. We all need to stick together. Who knows we may get a big 12 bid and I like our chance that our next coach will be a better in game coach then butchie. Guess what I'm getting at is 6 months from now the last two weeks might not matter.

See you at the basketball game.
Thanks Dan! We are lucky to have Dan as a voice of reason and to put things into perspective.

My bigger concern is the conference. I think we will be able to get a decent coach. If anything for some of the reasons that Dan mentioned. We really have become the Cradle of Coaches.
Something tells me that we'll be just fine now
Dan Hoard is a walking Magic 8 Ball.

Nailed it while guys like me were in full on panic mode.

Don't beat yourself up. We were all pretty depressed with the double kick to the groin of BE implosion followed by losing our coach. I just think this proves we have more offer than many think. We can pay good money, have a history of success, have a strong returning team, fertile recruiting areas, etc,
yup...I had an "episode" the day Butch announced he was gone....i'm better now.

mainly because Whit/Ono made one heck of a big name hire....away from a BCS B12 school. Unreal.
