Ok, so here's the situation: according to past media articles such as the ones from mysa.com for example, we had 67 total scholarship players overall. We are losing 6 players (the departing seniors) due to graduation, 5 of which were football players on a football scholarship (K Parker Cundiff was a walk-on).

Hence, we will be down to 62 scholarship players. This means in order to reach the maximum number of scholarship players of 85, what is allowed in the D1 FBS level, we will need to sign 23 recruits (and transfers too if there are any) for the 2013 recruiting class. Of course, this is all assuming that 1) no attrition occurs among the scholarship football players at any point from now till next fall (nor during the fall 2013 semester for that matter) 2) no one is declared academically ineligible for the 2013 season and 3) no NCAA sanctions befall UTSA that will lower the maximum limit of scholarship players that UTSA can have on the roster (though this is not something that we need to worry about at UTSA; I'm just putting it out there as a general reminder of a reason of when a school can't have 85 scholarship players); if situation #3 were to occur (again, it is unlikely since there is no hint of that even happening), then this obviously means that UTSA will have to sign a reduced number of recruits and transfers (up to whatever will be allowed).

If situation #1 occurs, then most like UTSA will have to sign more than 23 players and transfers in the next recruiting class. If situation #2 occurs that just means we will have at least one player unavailable for the 2013 season; I hope that doesn't happen again (for those that may not know, DT Dominique Henderson was the scholarship player that was ruled academically ineligible last fall).

So yeah, this is what we are looking at at the moment. Should we be worried? Do you think that the staff will be able to accomplish the goal of reaching 85 scholarship players by next fall? I really hope so since we really need the depth.

Another situation that can occur (as it has been done in the past) is that perhaps some of the walk-on players are awarded a football scholarship in the spring or during fall camp, reducing the number of players that the football staff would need to sign. Also, it might be ideal for the staff to actually sign more than 23 players just in case attrition needs to be anticipated (though this may get in to the issue of oversigning; someone correct me if I'm wrong though).

Also, since we will have more scholarship players on the roster from here on out, this means that UTSA will not be able to take as many walk-ons as before; I believe that the maximum number of players that a D1 FBS school can have on its roster is 105 and if there are exactly 85 scholarship players, that means that up to 20 players can join the team as walk-ons (someone correct me if I'm wrong though).
