The University of Cincinnati on Wednesday night strongly denied reports emanating from Denver that football coach Butch Jones had accepted the job as Colorado’s head coach.

“No decision has been made,” Jones said. “That’s false and erroneous. I’m just trying to make a decision. I’m taking my time and making sure I make the right decision because there’s a lot of families at stake.”

Jones spoke by phone from a restaurant in Charlotte where he was waiting for his flight home from a Belk Bowl press conference earlier in the day. He was accompanied by Ryan Koslen, UC’s sports information contact for football. “We’re in a Cracker Barrel in the middle of waiting for our plane and my phone blows up that I’ve accepted the Colorado job,” Jones said.

Asked when he would make his decision, Jones said, “I don’t know. I’ve got to get this over with. I’m not doing anything tonight.”

Jones said he had not talked to anyone from Colorado on Wednesday. He spent the day, he said, at the press conference and later sat in on some position meetings with the NFL Carolina Panthers.

Jones confirmed that he had met with UC athletic director Whit Babcock before leaving for Charlotte but said the meeting was not about his discussions with Colorado.

“That was just catching up,” Jones said. “He’s been out of town in New York City. We always do that. We would have been in there even if there was nothing going on.”

Asked if UC had made a counter proposal, Jones said, “They’re working on it. They’ll do the appropriate thing. I’m not trying to play one side against the other. That has nothing to do with it.”

They're working on a counter proposal. That's good news. Hope they work fast now that we're over two days since he got the offer from CU, but I doubt they'd be working a counter if he had said he was for sure leaving. The beat goes on boys and girls.
Finally a good article not being biased toward one side. Looks like the decision is up for grabs. As of now i feel 55-45 he stays. But, cmon butch will ya decide. The more you wait the worse it is affecting everybody!

Yes but Again, how does he make an informed decision until he has a counter proposal from UC as the article suggests?
"working on counter-proposal"
"not doing anything tonight"
"not talked with anyone from Colorado on Wed."

I have no idea what to think at this point....

Someone ain't bein honest perhaps. Or he's just really torn and confused. I flash back to how torn Huggs was, literally driving around town wondering what to do.

I'd bet money the his agent talked to Colorado today. I'm losing respect....
Nice to see Bill do some actual reporting.
Not to beat a dead horse but why would UC be working on a counter offer if he was gonzo??? They'd be moving on to the next guy. This doesn't make sense. Either these goons in Colorado are lying/wrong or Butch is. Schools make counters if they've talked and said "sit tight until we get a proposal together for you". They don't do that if he's already decided to go.
My wild a$$ guess: The report to the Denver Post was leaked by someone at CU who are tired of waiting and want to publicly force Butch to make a decision.

I Agree, this situacion is on someone though. If you put it that way I blame Colorado media and Cincinnati then for taking so long with this counter offer. This apparently was being talked about for a couple of weeks starting with an agreement to renovate nippert. Idk, I just think this should have been all done by now. Its taking way too long and if he is waiting on a counter offer that means a lot of this is about money and what UC is willing to do with the football program in the future. Colorado showed it's willing to do what it takes to become bigger. I think Butch loves Cincinnati and is waiting to see if they are willing to do what it takes. This decision will tell us a lot in my opinion

If that is true, that would be exhibit A why thier football program is a joke. Intentionally pissing someone off, and publicly embarassing them, generally isn't going to produce a decision in your favor.

I don't understand why they're just now working on a counter offer. Isn't this something that should have been done prior to tonight? If all of this was resting on us making a counter offer, why was Whit in New York yesterday instead of in Cincinnati? Hasn't President Ono made overtures that UC has already made an offer of some sort?

Every time I try to rationalize what has happened here, I find a hole in the logic. I'm giving up until we hear it from Butch because I honestly believe he's the only person in the world who knows exactly what's going on here.

It can drive you nuts trying to figure it out can't it?
Santa J. Ono ‏@PrezOno
Butch has told me the reports that he has accepted the CU job are absolutely false. I trust him.

That's comforting.

I wish Santa would maybe at least confirm the university's position here...ie. we are working on an offer to try to retain him or we are trying to convince him to stay, etc. otherwise it looks like we are just passively sitting here waiting for him to decide. I recall Goin speaking when Huggs was torn over WVU and he came out and publicly said "I've spoken to Bob and discussed the situation and offered him support in making his decisions and we've also offered some things to make us more competitive, etc." it wasn't über detailed but at least gave a uC perspective on what was going on.
Bearcat fans: They are working on a counter proposal. How can anyone give an answer until said individual has in writing a counter proposal in hand, agreed upon by the Board of Trustees? Folks, use your head. Negogiations this big take time. Mr.P.

Makes logical sense. But logic and sense went out the window about 48 hrs ago.

No, they really don't. It may take some time to get everything done "officially", but arranging the perimeters of a deal are pretty simple when you're the current head coach.
