How did this guy ever get to the Orange Bowl?

Oh, he didn't...

I know coaches like to 'strike while the irons hot' but as indicated: NCSU????

This one is strange.

A reported $1.8 million over 5 years will make you do some strange things.
How on earth did the Doeren hire happen in just 24 hours?
Was he interviewing during the season????

Unlike Jerry Kill, Doeren was able to keep it quiet until after the MACC Game.
saw an article that said he accepted the position 10 hours after the game. The AD for the NCSt was waiting for him in DeKalb with an offer.

We have rules regarding when you can and cannot talk to and sign players, it should be the same for coaches.

Agree 100%.

Can't talk to the coach until the team's final regular season game or his team's conference championship game, whichever is later.

Players don't receive a paycheck. I don't think you can apply the same limitations to a guys right to earn a living.

It should be that no university can talk to any coaches (assistant or head) until after the national championship.

and that 2 week break before the Super Bowl is there to give teams enough time to get uniforms for all of the new players they just signed?

Yeah, that sounds backwards to me. Players don't have a contractual obligation. Coaches do.

I wasn't talking about a mutually agreed upon contract. You can put anything in there you want basically. I was talking about the NCAA applying it to coaches outside the contract.

NCAA is all about rules. Why can't they forbid members from approaching any active coach during that sport's season? This seems simpler than most NCAA regulations.

They can. They won't because they have never shown much interest in protecting the smaller programs from the bigger ones. The big conference AD's want to be able to fill their vacancies as quickly as possible, and there is no serious impetus within the NCAA or its member schools to curb that. Why would they start making a bunch of complicated hiring rules to slow down the big juggernauts? If anything, they would like to make it easier for them to keep the gravy train coming. What's in it for them to make hiring rules that benefit conferences like the MAC at the expense of the Big Ten or SEC, et. al.?

Seems to me if you can have trade deadlines with players under contract in the pro's than coaching trade deadlines in the NCAA should be doable.

In order for Debbie Yow, the NC State AD, to talk to Doeren, Doeren had to have obtained a release from NIU. Evidently, he was given one by our AD, Jeff Compher. Not sure why Compher would have given him permission to talk to other schools before the bowl announcements, but that's another issue.

As far as the Wisconsin job, everything we've heard indicates that Wisconsin wasn't interested in Doeren being their Head Coach. If they were interested in him, he'd have been tipped off in advance of his taking the NC State job.

your assertion was that limitations can't be placed on a college coach for when they can leave a team because they are paid, I replied by giving an example that professional sports limits the time frames of moves for people who are paid.
all the ncaa needs to do to fix the coaching carosel is make schools wait until after the natnl champ game to contact coaches or terminate contracts of poorly performing but ethical coaches.

then, push signing date back a month to give time for new staffs to address recruiting.
