Quote:The U.S. birthrate plunged last year to a record low, with the decline being led by immigrant women hit hard by the recession, according to a study released Thursday by the Pew Research Center.

The overall birthrate decreased by 8 percent between 2007 and 2010, with a much bigger drop of 14 percent among foreign-born women. The overall birthrate is at its lowest since 1920, the earliest year with reliable records.
....
The average number of children a U.S. woman is predicted to have in her lifetime is 1.9, slightly less than the 2.1 children required to maintain current population levels.

Why?

NY Times argues that Americans are too busy spoiling themselves to have kids.

Women too busy trying to live the feminist dream. They'll regret it later, unfortunately.

there are 107 boys born to every 100 girls, they're exterminating themselves. Feminism is going to backfire.

Because like a good Christian Taliban, he believes women should be barefoot and pregnant cooking for dinner for their husbands.Afterall, women should be subserviant to their husbands because the Bible says so.

Nah. It is just your continued war on women.

What war? Show me. And not wanting to pay for a woman's floosy lifestyle is no more a war than my not wanting to not pay for someone's drug use.

Again, what war?
Wouldn't one assume that during crappy economic times many people may "forego" beginning a family (or adding to) until times are better financially? Only those least able to control themselves ignore the financial implications of a growing family.

This.

It would be arguably irresponsible to have children at this point in time, if you're not prepared. This generation isn't one that's coming of age in a great situation like those in the 90's and 80's.
Thanks to feminism men have won the war of the sexes! Women have become little more fcsk buddies throughout their 20's. Even "meaningful" relationships today among the young lack a binding commitment. What else could a man have wanted.

Or those that know growing up poor or rich has nothing to with growing up happy and well adjusted.
Wouldn't more births at this point in time lead to more on gov't assistance?
My guess would be the recession as well. That and women waiting later in life to have kids
There is little doubt that the recession is playing a major role, but the question is whether or not low-birth behaviors will change as the economy continues to improve

Try to explain this thought process coherently. Seriously.. what are you implying? Women are having less children in general, not like they're killing off their daughters and just keeping the boys.

I wonder about that. My hypothesis is that someone's income is inversely correlated to the number of offspring produced.

There are generally more males born than females (outside of China of course) because males are more likely to die young.

Yeah.. but if you're lowering the birth rate, it's going to down proportionately. You'll have less boys and girls.

I hear ya, I'm just trying to make sense of the previous post.
