That's the exception, not the rule. When Kill left NIU in 2010, the $500,000 buyout was paid by Minnesota with no problems.

KK's point is that the coach can unilaterally decide that he doesn't want to pay the buy out because it's "unfair." Our last basketball coach stuck up his middle finger and left.
Funny thing is his buddy that used to write slanted articles for him in regards to this has recently been hired by the school and we quit reading about the buyout.

Geez. Somehow not surprising though.

Ask yourself how important a company profile is if they offer to double or triple your current salary..

I always thought this too but what happens if they wait? Let's say NIU plays in Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, coach is poached Jan. 7th (remember, hypothetically no contact until after bowl game). Now NIU has to start looking for a coach after the BCS schools take their pick of the litter and doesn't have a coach until late Jan, and he still needs to assemble a staff. At least with a bowl game they can evaluate an interim coach and start the full search process.

All I'm saying is that no scenario is ideal, to lose your coach while celebrating a MACC win sucks.

The ideal scenario is for the NCAA to say you cant poach a *head* coach until right after the National Championship game. Put everyone in the same boat.
It does suck but like pointed out above you lose him January 7th and then the search for your own guy is on. Leaves you little to no time to get a staff in and recruiting done in time for LOI signing day which is the 1st Wednesday in February.

So if they moved the LOI signing day back, what complications would that cause?

We know all too well. :muttering:
I assume they don't move signing day because of March Madness. But the logical thing to do is move LOI day back to the first week of March and no hiring of coaches prior to conclusion of NC game. I know this makes way to much sense for the NCAA.
WHY DID HE LEAVE?????

HIS TEAM IS PLAYING IN A BCS BOWL!!

What a shame, it truly is. NIU could have been the next Boise, but when your coach goes moving on to another program, that just can't happen.

Good luck though Huskies.
I do think NCSU can be a good place. Think of what Grobe did at WF. NCSU can do more than that. Plus it may be Doerens version of Utah, a la urban

I wish coaches would at least stay through the bowl game. Wisconsin's Bielema is doing that. Hoke's leaving Ball State really hurt the Cardinals in both the MACC and their bowl game. Quinn as interim at CMU was not a good outcome for the Chips in their bowl game.

I understand taking a high-paying gig, but really, see it through at least to the bowl game.

I was thinking that very thing. But then I wondered if it would really help.
This is just another place where the NCAA shows its' impotence. It could fix this problem and have at least one example to point to where they have actually done something great.

The NCAA preaches sportsmanship and being honorable with binding letters of intent to student athletes - then tacitly supports a system where coaches are forced to lie to their teams and fans when accepting a new job and leave the students in the lurch before their bowl game reward. They and their new employers feel the pinch of the recruiting time period and don't want a disaster because it took so long to secure a new coach.

Ban any contact btw schools and other schools' coaches and include all the fancy lawyer language that includes agents, search firms, etc. Then, move all the recruiting 'live' and 'dead' periods and signing days to accommodate the changes.

You mean like when we won 11 games in 2010 and our coach left? And then we won 11 games again the next year, and 12 the year after?

And Doeren left because he quadrupled his salary. Who would say no?
The next Noise? How many 'next Boises' have we heard of in the MAC this year?

I'll buy that. I respect coaches looking to move on, but they do their current teams a disservice by leaving early, primarily b/c of recruiting.

I think you make good points.

Haven't heard it from me...03-lmfao
I bet Doeren wished he had waited as I bet the Wisconsin job would have been his for the taking.
