1. It was not a surprise

2. the timing was the "real" surprise

3. If the B1G was going to expand again, it was going to be EAST.

It's obvious that Jack keeps a close eye on a fast changing landscape.
This is correct, everyone in the B1G knew they were going to go east, it was the timing that puzzled everyone.
I'm not sure how the timing is such a surprise. First and foremost the conference commissioners of the so-called "Power Five" conferences want the Big East dead. What better way to do this than to steal the team in the largest TV market right as the league is trying to negotiate a new media deal.

Maryland people said they have been talking for a couple of years.

B1G doesn't care which conference the teams come from and the B1G could care less about killing the BE, just expanding the B1G Brand.

The B1G has been talking to quite a few schools for a few years now and it is nothing new.
Wasn't a surprise b/c the dialogue started back in 2009 when the B1G announced its intentions to expand -- Maryland was one of the schools targeted then.
If Swarbrick says he was surprised by the timing then I am not buying it. It was his school's move that caused this move to happen so soon. I would give him more credit than to be surprised by this. Either I give him more credit than he deserves or he is simply acting coy in public.

"Why oh my gosh I didn't see this one coming at all I swear" *wink* *wink*

"Yeah right, as if you midwesterners could pull one on ole Jack the trick Swarbrick!"
Big 10 has been talking to Cuse for years...and still is.

It was also within the coinciding timelines of the Big East's 27 month pre-notification period and just in time for any conference renegotiating their own contract in 2016. So as you say how could the timing not be expected. I imagine that having it happen during the negotiation phase of the Big East's new contract was an added serendipity for the Big 10 which now that they want to move into the New England market would like to see a greatly diminished, if not eliminated Big East. You mean the Cuse isn't satisfied with the ACC?05-nono
So when does Clemson, GT, FSU go? I just think its funny that the ACC finally gets to experience what the rest of us have. Looks we're to power four.

That's how I saw it. The Big Ten wanting Maryland didn't surprise me, but the fact that it just happened now absolutely surprised me.

Has to be b/c ND went off the table, so the B1G moved on.

That is the general assumption of why it happened now. That and Maryland has a limited time to act before they pass by the time when they have given their consent to the 50 million dollar exit fee. For Rutgers it has to do with getting out of the Big East before they sign a new tv contract and Rutgers is part of the valuation. If they leave soon after that they could face damages for that.

I dont understand his comments about smu and tcu
Probably why they nabbed Cuse and Pitt.
Can't wait to see how surprised Swarbick is when FSU, Clemson, VaTech, NcState, UVA and (UNC or GTech) walk out the door.

Really won't surprise him much now. The good thing is we have options and if those schools move on we would wish them well. What's the worst that can happen? We join the Big 12? Hell we could call the Pac 12 and get a eastern pod together I bet. No worries, interesting though to watch unfold.

They overplayed their hand. They should have kept the BE in place so they could say "at least we're not them". They oversold it, and took so many of the teams from the conference they despise while not producing on the field results. They've played themselves out of the big 5. Maryland jumping proves that if money is what is sought even with a large payout they can find a sugar daddy to buy their way out. It's unfortunate what all of this has created.

Sure, you can go to the Pac 12 or Big 12... but Notre Dame would have to be a full member like everyone else at that point. No half-indy deal. Of all the options for full membership, which one do you think would make most sense for them? Pac12, Big12, ACC, or B1G?
