“This is the fun part of my job. I’m a deal maker,” Benson said. “I have always been an active commissioner in making deals with bowls. This is really fun to me.”
Another article, breaking down the chances of Sun Belt schools in each possible bowl

Per Sparks, once again, neither the GoDaddy or New Orleans Bowl has to take the champion, as long as the champion goes to a bowl.

I don't think the GoDaddy ever "has" to take the champion, only the NO Bowl. The NO Bowl has the take the champion two out of every four years. If there is a tie, that may also count as taking the champion.
IF Troy gets to 7 wins im pretty sure we will be going to Godaddy.com
Not much talk of ASU in that last article but with our showing in the bowl last year, our attendance this year and our proximity to Memphis, Dallas and Birmingham I would think we would be in the mix for those three. If Liberty opens up to the Belt I can't imagine another team being invited.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl
When: Dec. 31

Where: Memphis

Contracted bids: C-USA No. 1 vs. Big East No. 5/SEC No. 8-9

Status: Central Florida is a popular pick for C-USA representative. Big East likely cannot fill, and SEC will have trouble if it has two teams in BCS bowls. If Tennessee gets bowl eligible, the SEC’s chances at filling it would greatly increase.

Sun Belt scenario: Arkansas State, WKU and MT each would like to land here. A title team would have the inside track, especially if the game matches champions from Sun Belt and C-USA.
I saw that one and I know it was an MTSU writer. I am just really excited about the possibilities for ASU and the rest of the conference this year.

As long as the SBC champion is invited to a bowl, I dont think either of these 2 HAVE to take them.

Pretty sure this was the case when FIU went to Detroit. They were the SBC champions, but since Lil Ceasers gave them the invite GO Daddy and NOBowl were free to invite others.
The good news is that some of those bowls have a larger payout then the two bowls we are tied in with. That just means more money, more money, more money going to be split up this year. Now we get atleast two teams into the NCAA tourny in basketball we'll be getting something done.

You're new to this concept eh?

No one is making money off these bowl games unless you sell a butt load of tickets and even then it's small.

If the contracted conferences aren't in it- it probably breaks the contracted amount of $$ that goes to the participating schools/conferences.

If that is the case, I assume the go by the going rate for a SBC bowl.

And the "going rate" isn't always what it seems. New Orleans Bowl may pay out less (on paper) but actually "pays" more than other bowls.

ArkStFan has broken this down for us many times before.
Bowls are a money loser for sure. At least at the level the SBC is at.

However, if you look at it as a 4 hour commercial about your University its a very good investment.
That's true, I know when UConn went to a BCS game a few years ago, they lost a ton of money.

Yep. Hard to put a price on that.

Nothing earth shattering in the article, but its good to have more then a few bowl eligible teams in the SBC.
Liberty has a guaranteed payout.
In the InjunJohn perfect world of maximizing teams and attendance, this is what I would like to see for the SBC. Based on who is and who can/should be eligible for bowls:

GoDaddy: Troy
New Orleans: ULL
Independence: ULM
Liberty: ASU
Music City: MTSU
Little Caesar/B'ham: WKU

Think we will only get 5 but 6 would be nice. This wouild be geographically the best (sorry WKU) and would maximize attendance opportunities for each school.
If an SBC team makes it to Birmingham, I may have to go to that bowl to support my SBC brethern.

Makes to much sense John, so it probably won't happen.
