Washington outfielder Bryce Harper was named BBWAA NL Rookie of the Year tonight. Arizona pitcher Wade Miley was second and Reds infielder Todd Frazier was third in the voting.
Frazier hit .273 with 19 homers and 67 RBI, mostly playing third base or first base.
Harper hit .270 with 22 homers and 59 RBI.
Miley was 16-11 with a 3.33 ERA.
Voters increasingly consider the stat of Wins Above Replacement (WAR), where Harper had the edge. Harper had a WAR of 5.0, Miley 3.3 and Frazier 1.9 according to the WAR stats used by Baseball-Reference.com and ESPN. Harper had the best WAR of any player in his age 19 season (and younger) since 1900, according to ESPN.
Harper led NL rookies in runs (98), total bases (254), triples (9), extra-base hits (57), multi-hit games (45) and outfield assists (8). He did not turn 20 until October 16, which means Harper was only one month older than Dwight Gooden was when the New York Mets pitcher became the youngest Rookie of the Year winner in 1984.
Relief pitcher Scott Williamson (1999) was the last Red to win Rookie of the Year honors.
