The lesson of losing Ayers should forever reign at ETSU. You know the small guy is going to lose to big money programs when they want to pluck from you. What's amazing is that Mike Ayers would have considered staying at ETSU even after his Alma mater came calling...if the Bucs would've shown some interest. It's a painful chapter. I love Mike Ayers, his integrity, his fire and work ethic. I'll never forget that he came to the dome for the last game to show respect even though he had his own Wofford team to prepare. That's class, that's Mike Ayers. He may be from Wofford, but in my book, he's a true Buc...who did more with little than most could ever imagine. I don't know what conference, what level or anything else about football's return....but it would be smart to talk to Ayers about it. I know I'm crazy...but when the Bucs had it rolling, nationally ranked and all, Les Robinson should have been locked up...every effort should have been made to keep him away from his Alma mater. I'm naive enough to think that all true Bucs would turn a blind eye to mega bucs and national fame....to stay home and make mega bucs and fame right in Johnson City. Gonzaga built a machine...kept their coach. When ETSU climbs the mountain again, gets national attention...let's know how to play the game and keep the winning team to sustain the winning and the recognition! Chattanooga made the sweet 16 first thing that happens is our ole buddy Mack McCarthy splits...that should not be.
Actually the Bucs have a pretty good football heritage, certainly one we can build on. After all, only a handful of schools have won a NCAA football national championship. The Bucs were national champions in 1969 after winning the Grantland Rice Bowl. See the Grantland Rice Bowl article in Wikipedia at . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantland_Rice_Bowl. Yet, I seldom hear them referred to as past national champions.

The actual trophy rests in the center of the Memorial Center west side trophy case. It reads NCAA Football National Small College Champions. Today this would be comparable to the NCAA Football FCS Championship.

And it is as if the NCAA created the FCS exactly for schools like ETSU. We do not have a lot of money but we are a regional state university and want to play football on a nice level. FCS. That is exactly where we can be and need to be ASAP.
