Best part, he claims of trading in that Illini garbage for Huskie Pride!

Awesome find
Yes, great article. Thanks for posting.

Quote from the article: "I keep track of most teams in most sports for a living, and my knowledge of NIU football ranks down there with my knowledge of DeKalb politics. That’s partly my fault and partly Northern Illinois’ for not publicizing the Huskies better."

Uh, oh.

great article and couldn't agree more.

"It wouldn’t hurt if NIU’s administration also let fans know who the Huskies are, what they want to be and how they plan to get there.
For now, though, Huskies football is sort of a hidden gem, including here in some of the suburbs not too far from DeKalb. NIU might be the Boise State of the Midwest without many knowing it."
It's funny he would say that. If I may rant for a minute, I just cancelled my subscription to the Daily Herald. NIU articles showing the results for NIU in there seem to be increasingly relegated to page 5 or 7 next to the box scores, typically in a place where you would never see it unless you were looking for it. One Saturday, I looked and there was absolutely nothing about our game that day. Nothing. Inexcusable. They can point fingers at the NIU administration and maybe with some merit, but the newspapers make it worse by advertising results from TSISB or Big 10 to the virtual exclusion of everyone else.

I still subscribe. They've always had a story from what I recall, but yes they are typically on the page as the other "directional Illinois" schools.

That being said, today's story in on the Front page with large pic and takes up almost half the page.

I just saw the paper. Color pic of Lynch in action! This is great exposure and quite a nudge to get NIU's publicity moving.
This is not a good article. It's a great article! Northern Illinois, who?
Why isn't athletic marketing showering this dude with all sorts of NIU paraphernalia and statistics?
If they didn't have a name before, now they do.
Our budget must be nonexistent while a few fat cats pocket nice pay checks and see everything as just fine.
As much as I think the team could be marketed better, anybody locally who claims to be a fan of college football should know how NIU has done lately. Especially if you're a freaking writer for a newspaper! NIU needs to market more to the casual fan. If the newspapers helped with this by not relegating NIU articles to those days and locations where it's convenient while mostly concentrating on a few other schools, then NIU's job would be much easier. The team's results should speak for itself, particularly when it's getting a lot of votes for the Top 25.

It doesn't work that way. PR is invaluable in getting the attention of the Daily Herald or any newspaper. But, we need to do our part also.

We should be emailing Mike Imrem (and Cc-ing the editor), thanking him for the great article. We also need tell them that Huskie fans read the DH and expect better coverage of Huskie Football.
I expect better coverage of a team when the results are there. And they have been for 2+ years.

They don't really want to cover us. So I doubt emails will make much difference. They'll cover us when it's convenient.

Good attitude.

We just had a great article on NIU Football and have a chance to build on it with the Daily Herald. It's an opportunity we shouldn't pass up.

They've done articles before. They do have to fill up the pages. Whatever works for them. It's not an attitude, it's a reality.

Everyone needs to click on the link and FB recommend it or tweet the article. That stuff does help along with the email as Bob suggested.
I guess I just think it would have been a good article to write a year or 2 before now.
We used to get good press from the DH from Lindsey Willhite. Has he stopped covering the Huskies?
Yeah - Lindsey does PR for the Chicago Wolves now.

Definitely agree.......I emailed Mike this morning, thanking him for the recognition. Received a response from him, saying that the blame for lack of coverage probably falls in both camps - NIU's marketing efforts and the media's focus on other schools
