Shopping for Xmas this weekend.
Barely ever play games, but I have an XBox. Worth mentioning that both are expected to come out with a new system next year.

Honestly? Neither at this point. Xbox 720 and PS4 are coming next year and will be lightyears ahead of current systems.
If you're shopping for younger kids, then you might want to grab Nintendo's new Wii U system. It will be the hottest kid's toy this holiday season.
PS3 is a better system and is a blue ray player.

I would go PS3 again...buying would say it depends on your needs. A lot of gamers think the online play is better on the 360, plus they seem to get a lot of exclusive content unavailable on PS3 (just search for "PS3 Dawnguard").
I got an XBox for my birthday and enjoy it. You do have to pay for online access, where you don't with PS3, but you can get 1 year xbox gold cards on Amazon for pretty reasonable prices

If you are using the blueray as a reason to buy a game system you are doing it wrong.
Of course, the 360 was originally more like the PS3...except HD-DVD lost to Blu-Ray.

Every gamer I know is happily married with a nice family, works in the corporate world, and is around 40yrs old.

Not sure how old your son is. I would get some input from his friends. My son is 11 and got a XBOX last year. Most of the time he is playing is online with his friends. They all had XBOX .That was the main reason we got it.
Get them some type of ball. Cheaper and better.
I have both, I also have a 1 year old and never get a chance to play either one any more. However, I was very much on the PS3 bandwagon when they both came out. That is, until I got my xbox 360. Now, if I ever do play games, it's only the xbox. It's also the only system I have purchased a new game for in a couple of years.
IMHO... It's just an overall better gaming system.
