Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips has been fired.
As a Kentucky alum, I was never really happy with either the decision to hire Phillips (no prior head coaching experience) or the way it happened (designated as Rich Brooks's successor two years before he took over -- no real coaching search). He's got deep program ties (an alumnus who spent 16 years as an assistant in the program), but he didn't have the kind of qualifications that a program like that, hoping to at least be competitive in the SEC, should have looked for.
So who are the early candidates for Ky?

Look at the difference a change has made at Vandy.
MAC might be the place these schools look. MAC isn't under the radar this year.

Hopefully the dumpster fire in Illinois makes them second guess any looks toward our conference.

I don't know. There is no perfect strategy in these things. This could easily have been a home run for KY.

I'd like to see good MAC coaches start grooming replacements. That's important in a conference where the successful guys are going to get poached.
