In the past, we only showed ads to guests ... people who weren't logged in.
Today we are now showing ads to everybody except the following groups:
- Administrators
- Moderators
- Supermoderators
- Anybody who donated to the site any amount of money on or before 2/1/11
- Skunkworks
- Premium subscribers
To get premium you have to pay a reasonable amount ($15/yr or $5/mo). For that all ads are removed from the site. In the future, this will also get you access to our own custom mobile apps.
Some questions you may have:
Why do people who donated get free premium forever?
They helped the site out when it needed it most early on. They paid for the hardware we are using. And some of them paid quite generously both in amount, or what they were able to scratch together while eating ramen in college.
Why are you expanding ads now?
To help pay the bills. Our next server upgrade will not be cheap, as we are approaching the limits of what one server can do. I do not want to use so called "cloud" based services like Amazon EC2 because I don't trust the people running them. Yesterday for 3-4 hours Reddit and other huge swaths of the internet were out as the Amazon EC2 US-EAST services went belly up.

I will soon be adding adblock autodetect to every page of the site. If you're using adblock, it will display an image at the top of every page asking you (nicely) to please disable it for our site. If you're still a heartless yabbo after that ... that's your buisness. :)
Can I see LESS ads without paying?
Sort of. It will serve you 2 ads for any page load of less than 9 posts. For any page with 9 or more posts, it will serve you 3. You are free to set your posts-per-page setting in UserCP to 50 ... thus serving you 5 times more posts with the same amount of ads. Obviously this option does not apply for guests who aren't logged in.
This sounds reasonable. Where can I sign up?

How do I know if I'm in one of these free premium user groups?
Go to the Premium link up top in the nav under "Info". If you qualify, it will tell you. If you donated, you should have gotten a PM from me giving my thanks and explaining that you would be exempt as well.
I'm a previous donor (or skunkworks, or some other group that is entitled to free premium) but I still want premium. Can I do that?
Yes. Go to the premium page and will still allow you to do so.
