EMU's biggest problem might be this: they're not even third in their media market (metro Detroit), they're third tier. Tier 1 is the Detroit pro teams, tier 2 is the B1G teams (2a Michigan 2b Michigan State), 3 is everybody else (EMU, Wayne State, Detroit, etc.). So even when EMU does something good, on or off the court/field, most people don't hear about it.
I'd say CMU and WMU are a tier above EMU.
The Detroit/SE Michigan media are exactly like he described. After all the gallons of ink spilled on the pros and UM and MSU, they bury the MAC games in with DII and DIII state college scores. It's pathetic.

To be fair Detroit (and Oakland) draw better than MAC teams for Bball. Tier 2.5?
The biggest problem is that Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor are simply too close together. No reason for two large universities, where one overshadows the other so much, to be located in adjacent cities.
Eastern Michigan needs to somehow find a way to start building a branch campus in a place like Port Huron, St. Clair, Marine City, New Baltimore, or Monroe with the ultimate plan of moving everything.
Start with some science and technology buildings, as well as dorms with modern amenities, and then move on to other departments. Also relocate all athletic department facilities as quickly as possible.
Once the new campus is fully done, sell the old campus to the University of Michigan, where they can establish new departments or something. EMU should actually be situated in Eastern Michigan.

While I don't disagree with that, what about CMU? They sell a considerable number of tickets and are literally in the middle of nowhere.
When you are the middle of nowhere then it puts more of a spotlight on that event. If CMU is the only thing around it helps to keep them being overshadowed as much. EMU is on top of another bigger school which makes it harder to stand out even if doing well in its own community.
Eastern Michigan is in a very poor region, the area does not have the success of Ann Arbor, there was thunderstorms in the vicinity on the day of the game and it was pouring rain after the first few minutes of the game. Being in the shadow of the Big House certainly does not help whatsoever, many of my friends and me plan to attend EMU if we go to college (Probably go to Community College first) but all of us are UofM or MSU fans first. If you really want to help EMU out with attendance numbers then bring more fans, Toledo, even if they claim to have had more fans than us, did not have more. The EMU side was filled halfway with almost all EMU fans, Toledo brought half the amount we had (Sure were louder though) but I don't blame them, that weather was just awful all day and it was cold to add to that. I think spending $24 (Ticket, Bratwurst, Fries, and large drink) is worth making it a weekly thing it's just that they don't see the light of day with UofM in the news nearly 100% of the time. Also, I do believe the original poster to be a troll incognito.

You just described no less than 25 years. More like 40-50.
You can't just pick up a University and move it overnight.

That is EXACTLY why I don't have hope to save EMU. I have nothing against EMU fans personally... I have nothing against EMU personally. I simply do not believe it is realistic to expect them to make significant advances to the program, no matter what they do... Short of moving it away from UofM.
Quote:J Guy MAC (the MAC PR guy) actually appointed me official spokesman on the removal of Eastern Michigan from the MAC.
That's the dumbest lie I've ever heard. No one appointed some message board dude about becoming the "official" spokesperson for removing of another school.
You're delusional.
Aside from Temple in the Big East, who was an associate, football only member, has there ever been a scenario where a school COULD be removed from a conference without hordes of legal issues? I kind of doubt it, which is why conferences are slow and deliberate to invite schools. So, not only is this a stupid discussion guaranteed to cause bad blood, it's not even a feasible consideration anyway. It's like arguing who deserves mineral rights on the Moon.

I thought it was pretty clear that was a joke. Actually, it was more of a dig towards J Guy MAC than anything...

The EMU administration is CRUSHED. They were SO counting on YOU saving them. What will they do now? What will they do? I guess its over for the Eagles. Sad day indeed.

I would have believed him if it was NIU. That guy forgets about us like crazy.
SPOILER ALERT:
My next controversial thread will be a "Fire J Guy MAC" thread.

He does a fine job...just he is obviously in love with anything Ohio (the state in general not specifically the school)

That's more than countered by not having that many people in the area (though Mt. Pleasant has a decent population). It's still better to be near larger population bases, even if you might not have the limelight to yourself.
Isn't there a MAC Smack Talk board built for just this kind of nonsense? This kind of absolute guff that should be such a minor part of discourse on a football discussion board, to call out a whole school for removal from the league from a guy from a school that just won its first bowl game EVER last season? But I'm not going to fall into the trap of attacking Ohio based on one or two goons.
If you've been around this board and its predecessors as some of us have, you can remember when it was NIU and Kent on the chopping block from some well-intentioned people, here to save the MAC from being "dragged down." Buffalo spent a lot of years with people wanting them gone. Akron. BG. The idea that any of these schools would or should be kicked out is just as absurd as the idea that they shouldn't when they have a good season and people show up.
If you went to a school and root for the school, maybe you don't live near the school enough to go to games, but you like there being a program and wish the best. EMU has some very fervent fans who are suffering enough just with wanting the FB team to be good. EMU, less than year removed from a 6-6 year where they beat both other Michigan MAC schools, and less than a week from taking Toledo to the wire. Eventually they will get a coach with the vision and skill to turn things around. They may already have that coach, I don't know. But we'll see if when they reach the top of the mountain, EMU fans are looking down at someone to eliminate from the MAC.
Cylical, as someone said. Enjoy your time at the top, Optimist.
Optimist is like the preacher yelling at the people in the pews about those who don't show up at church. The EMU fans on this forum are the ones likely to support the program. Why alienate them?
Having seen two AD's at Kent State suffer through terrible seasons and worse attendance, trust me, the administrators at EMU don't need a bulletin from a message board. They know it's bad. If they could fix attendance, they would.
The best attendance in the MAC is in a range of 25-30K, a laughable figure by most BCS programs. No one in the MAC is Ala-Damn-Bama. Some fans need to get over themselves.
