I enjoyed the video and I think the presenter made some great points. However, I shudder at the idea of our current educational system trying to implement - and make no mistake these concepts were probably already tried before. This is where the ideas like "new math", "reading for concepts", and that the solution is "close enough" comes about. Based on empirical evidence over the years, we know that our current crop of teachers will start applauding Billy for giving this "brilliant" divergent thought answer because he astutely noted that 2 + 2 = "two fishhooks"... "YAY Billy!!!!"...

I was raised on the brand new show Sesame Street, we're talking 2:15 video...tops!
Did you watch the video Torch? I thought the last part about molding kid's assembly line wise, was right in your wheelhouse.
The creativity part too. We get less creative as we go through the system. I thought that was pretty interesting.

I didn't have time to watch it yesterday, but I just watched it tonite.

Anyway, I liked the video a great deal, however I thought he made some leaps that were completely wrong. Yet in general, the idea that we need to stop looking at "smart" or "vocational" educations as success or failure...that's critical.

Yes, that assembly line description is one I agree with, but I don't think it's a shock. It was overtly put in that way from the beginning, and that's not a criticism.

Understanding that people learn well in different sized groups? That's a big one, and one I've pointed to as a huge advantage for home schooling.

So curiously he likes groups, but criticizes the groupings. The assembly line? Grouping kids by age? Those aren't as big of a problem as he hints at...otherwise we wouldn't have our educational system. Schools group kids by age b/c there are some consistencies in human development, the bell curve if you will. Furthermore, we break that apart in HS, as some kids take Alg II in 10th grade, some in 11th, some in 12th. Not perfect, but the system does recognize the same observation as this guy, and has some mechanisms in place to address it. Once again, home schoolers recognize this and have developed tools to solve it for themselves.

However, what he doesn't get to in this video is any practicable solutions for a large school system. So I don't know where he's headed. However, I do think I'm doing the divergent thinking when I say that we should get past the panic if all kids don't graduate from high school. Let's be honest, you say that to 100 people, and 99 of them gasp in shock or horror, the idea of not going to school is so foreign they can't even believe it wasn't done this way since the dawn of time.
