There is a rumor on the TCU board that along with the Liberty Bowl reps, there will be Gator Bowl reps at the TCU/CSU game this week. I am very skeptical about the Gator Bowl rumor (just makes no sense), but was wondering if there are any known scenarios where the Gator Bowl can go outside of its ACC/BE tie-in? Specifically, would both ND and the BE champ going to the BCS mean that the Gator would have an "out clause" rather than locked into taking a BE team? Just an informational request only- not trying to start something (most Frog fans think it is complete BS, too so don't go into the "you guys are delusional" rants, please).

Of course, we have to win out for any creative bowl matching up to take place (CSU is going to be a tough game, IMO), but it is no secret that the MWC is going to shop a potential 10-1 BCS top 10-15 TCU around.
Wouldn't surprise me, Frog. Bowl reps are always scheming, despite agreements and committments they sign up to. If the Gator does wish to go a different direction this season, I would hope that they're ready to pony up a HUGE chunk of $$$ to the BE as compensation.
The answer is no.... only the BE/ND and the ACC can be selected for the Gator. NOW, if the BE or ACC (or any other conference) do not have enough eligible teams for a particular bowl game, then that bowls board of directors (or selection committee) can chose whoever they want.

Here's the scoop from the BE website:

BCS/Bowl Lineup

The BIG EAST and the Bowl Championship Series

The BIG EAST Bowl Lineup for 2005

In addition to the Bowl Championship Series, the BIG EAST Conference currently has agreements with three other postseason bowl games. The league is associated with the Toyota Gator Bowl, Insight Bowl and Meineke Car Care Bowl for the 2005 season.

The Toyota Gator Bowl, played in Jacksonville, Fla., will select a team from the BIG EAST after the Bowl Championship Series accepts the conference champion. The BIG EAST choice will be matched up against the selection from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Toyota Gator Bowl will be played on January 1, 2006 and will be televised by NBC.

The Insight Bowl will choose a team from the BIG EAST for the eighth year in a row. That game will be played at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz. on December 27 on ESPN. The contest will match a BIG EAST choice against a selection from the Pacific-10 Conference.

The BIG EAST will send a team to Charlotte, N.C. for the fourth consecutive season. The league member will play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on December 31 on ESPN2. The Atlantic Coast Conference will provide the opposition.

All four bowl games will choose from among the group of BIG EAST bowl-eligible teams. Finish in the conference standings does not determine bowl selection.

The BIG EAST and the University of Notre Dame have an agreement which allows Notre Dame the opportunity to be selected by the Toyota Gator Bowl, Insight Bowl or Meineke Car Care Bowl if the Fighting Irish are bowl eligible and do not qualify for the Bowl Championship Series.

All bowls will adhere to the conference's "one-win" rule whether they select a BIG EAST team or Notre Dame. Any selection of a team with fewer victories must be within one win of all other bowl eligible teams. League squads must be within one conference victory. For example, a team with a 4-3 BIG EAST record cannot be chosen before a team with a 6-1 league mark. Overall records are used for comparison when a bowl is considering Notre Dame in conjunction with a conference team.
Thanks, Hoquista. Makes sense, of course.

I won't rant about "you guys being delusional..." but the person starting that rumor may be! 03-razz

Highest paying bowl with an unassigned, assured open spot will be the Liberty. Poinsetta has an opening but that's already a MWC bowl. Others may find themselves without 1 or both affiliates able to field an eligible team, but I can't think any of those options would be more attractive to TCU.

ACC only has six assigned slots this year and should fill those with 1-2 teams to spare.

Big Ten and Pac 10 are in line to meet their assignments provided neither fields two BCS teams, in which case the Music City may have to look outside the BE (pending their situation) while the Emerald or Insight might have to look outside the Pac 10.

SEC is in danger of abandoning the Music City, Independence and/or Houston Bowl.

The Big 12 might also miss out on the Houston or Champs Sports.

Of all those the Liberty is likely going to have the most attractive opponent. Now, the question is, does the Liberty find themselves considering a match-up with an SEC team as a payoff for that conference becoming a formal affiliate next year? In which case TCU might be in Houston playing the likes of UTEP or USM.
